Cheryl, he sure was a cutie. I am so sorry that you lost him, but I know he will live in your heart forever. He crossed over to the rainbow bridge on our anniversary.

We waited until the 6th because my sister-in-law's anniv was the 5th and they didn't want him going on that date. They are such dog people too and were very upset that Max went so fast.

Thank you all for your kind words. I still feel like I didn't do enough to save Max at the end.
Max was a true survivor his whole life. He was born on Nov. 8. 1993 and came home with us on Jan. 28, 1994. Within 2 months he started having multiple seisures that were bad. We took him to the vet and he sent us to the Univ of Wisc to be checked out. They told us he had problems within the brain (diseased) and or epilepsy. They suggested that if the seisures continued as bad we should put him down. Well, we took him home and talked to our vet. We started medications. He was on phenobarbital his whole life.
Then his stomach was very sensitive and he had to have rice twice daily. He could never have an empty stomach because that would cause vomiting. So he was on soloxine and metoclopramide for the rest of his life. (We didn't have the pet insurance back then)
Max never slowed down. He played all day long and was a great watchdog.
In 2000 Max got so sick he almost died. He got pancritis.
Then in the fall of 2004 Max tore his ACL ligament and needed surgery. To have it done locally would cost almost $1400. Our vet sent us to a clinic 1 hour away and they only charged $600.
In Jan. 2005 Max started acting very strange. He stopped eating and would just stare at us. He would lean up against the wall and couldn't walk straight.
We went back to the vet and they said his spleen had a huge mass (cancer) attached to it. So, we had his spleen removed.
Max healed fast and was back to his old self. I went on vacation with my sister in July and my husband said he was sick again. When I got home he seemed alright for about 1 week. Then all of a sudden he went down. He stopped eating and drinking. He just laid there and we had to help him outside. Back to the vet immediately and the test showed that the mass had come back and attached to his liver. On to more specialists and tests and the final diagnosis: chemo to just slow it down. No shrinking it or curing him, just slow down his death!!!! Within one week we went from this to saying goodbye with dignity. It was the hardest thing to do and watch but I wouldn't put him thru chemo just to slow down his death.
When I would sit reading, Max would always lay right next to my left foot. About 1 week after his death, I was sitting on the porch reading and I saw this tiny thing go by my feet. I thought it was a mouse!!! When I looked down it was a baby bunny. It just sat in front of me staring at me. I just went back to reading and then I felt something at the side of my left foot. The bunny was laying next to me sleeping!!!! It stayed with us for about 2 weeks living in the front yard in the tall grass (wouldn't let my son mow it) in a little patch it had made for itself. Then it was gone.
Sorry I rattled on. But we try to do our best for our 4 legged babies and in the end we only hope they knew we really did love them with all our hearts.
Cheryl
