If it was only once then it could just simply be itchy bum:tongue6:

If he continues to do it then get it checked out:D

Here is how I did it.........

As told by Scrappy on his blog.......

When I was little I used to love to play with daddy's socks. That was until this one day when they noticed me walking funny and mommy took me to the bathroom to get some tissue to help me with and she called for daddy to come help her. I was really scared and I was shaking so daddy held me close while mommy worked on the problem. Daddy started to walk away still holding me as mommy very gently worked the elastic out. Mommy says she still has trouble looking at a link of sausages and all I can say is it was quite a relief when it was all over! Daddy just said he was suprised at how far a bit of sock elastic can stretch. Don't worry mommy rang the vet 2 times to make sure she was doing the right thing. The vet said as long as it was slipping out and not being tugged that I was going to be ok. Very, very scary stuff. So to all my pup pals out there be very careful of socks. They may smell yummy but they can hurt you if you are not careful.

The end ;)

Or, it could have been a dingle berry, but you have discounted that :)

Well, did you look at his bum to see if it was red or rashy???? Kallie gets her anal glands expressed every other bath by me but sometimes she still scoots! I check her and sometimes it is like slightly red, irritated so I use the stuff for baby rash on it and hold her for about 10 minutes or she'll scoot the stuff right back off! Worms is another reason ............ but I agree if he's only done it once, I wouldn't worry.:D

Anal glands are the most EVIL things , it is EXTREMELY common in the small breeds for them to become impacted . I hope Nemo was just having an itch . Bren that story of Scrappy HORRIFIED me . Sarah

Here A$$ is something we call people, LOL

eg:-

Like your acting like an A$$

You A$$hole

I will kick you in the A$$

etc etc etc

If we are taking about our behind, well we usually say Butt or bum and some men( most men) say " well she's got a great A$$"

LOL, so many differnet ways of saying the same word, LOL

I have to add, that since we watch so many American TV shows, it cracks my kids up everytime, someone says " sit on your Fanny", Or "kick them in the fanny". Fanny in Aussie is a females front private part. LOL

In Florida, we would say "we GAVE her a bath." I use to call eye lashes, eye winkers, lol until I got made fun of. I was originally from the north but have converted to the "southern" lingo. YOU All come back now! LOL:)

first off... call me a moron but is "scooting" when they drag their rear ends along the rug???

anyways... i am becoming very concerned with my little guy (spencer) who has been acting real odd since being groomed (it was a major one as he was very matted). his ass has been bothering him which was his anal glands the time before this grooming, so back we went to the groomers and they did the expressing biz... (lemme say here that i heard him let out this scream that made me kinda nervous while in the back gettin expressed which the dude said wasn't him being squeezed but when he put water on his rear to clean - this doesn't sound right cuz spence knows water...he's been in the tub plenty of times before). it's still bothering him and he's now walking funny occasionally like curvy as though his rear-end wants to catch up with the front of him. he also is still paying alot of attention to his backside like it's itchy or painful to him... i dunno. i swear if that dude was too rough on him and hurt him while expressing his glands, lord help him as i will lose it! spencer can be a bit.... hmmm.... scratch that... IS a big wimpy baby. so do u think that perhaps he's still just freaked out from going hairy/matted to shaved and it just feels weird for him or should i be more concerned with this?
*sorry for the long post:o

thanks in advance for all your help!

ps. i will post some new pics of my little guy too

:)

Well, that's what I call scooting, dragging their wee butts across the floor.:D

I do the anal glands myself on both dogs and is usually pretty simple and not painful if done properly. Neither of my babies have ever flinched when I've done them. Perhaps your little guy is impacted (or was) and the "expressing" did not work or the impacted stuff may have passed but even then, I would not think it would hurt but then I'm not a vet. I don't now why he would be behaving in the manner you described of being a side winder. Perhaps it is the "naked" loss of hair and he is looking for the rest of himself, I'm just not sure. BUT, if I were you, I'd watch him and then call the vet. Other thing I might do is call the groomer and see if the guy was able to suppress anything from the glands..........and go from there. Did the groom er shave around the anal area and maybe that made him a little raw. Hope he is fine and just reacting to his loss of hair!!!

Hmmm...That's strange. My hubby expresses our furbabies' anal glands, and they have NEVER let out a terrifying scream or anything like that... It sounds like this guy may have hurt him, but I don't want to jump to conclusions...Is his rear end red or irritated, can you tell? If you're super concerned, I would just take a trip to the vet's office and see what they tell you.

houZ
05-05-2007, 02:25 PM
no his bum isn't red or looking out of place other than it's not nice and shaved... i couldn't even see it through all the fur before. i've been to the groomers again... i popped into the old vet (i now goto the spca) to ask their opinion and have heard pretty much the same response. im just going to try and pretend it's back to normal and if by monday he still acts like his arse has a mind of it's own then it's off to the vet. you guys do the expressing yourselves?? i guess i should learn how to do it but i should say that i have issues with cutting his nails... i haven't tackled being afraid of hurting him yet. he tends to pull away which doesn't help the situation. i need to stop being a wuss, then i can add anal expression specialist to my list of skills... lol

The nails can be scary if your baby is squirmy. Usually my hubby holds them and talks softly to them, while I clip the nails or vice versa. If you have someone to help you, it makes it so much easier.
Just cut the very tip. Buy some quik stop at petsmart or any pet store and have it on hand, just in case you cut too far back. But as long as you only cut the tips, you'll be just fine!
Also, I find it easiest to groom them, clip their nails, etc. after they're worn out. I play really hard with them and have them playing fetch, running around. Then they get tired, so they're less likely to be squirmy when they're getting groomed :)
The anal glands, I don't do myself. My hubby does that!

This made me laugh (not at you) because I try to do that very thing. I bring him down the street where there is a park/beach area with a big hill sorta. I stand at the top of the hill and throw the ball as far as I can (down the hill) and he loves to take off after it. Now invision that he has to come back uphill to bring it to me if he wants another go. One would think that this would tucker out a little dog pretty quickly.... 30-40 mins later... it's me who is the tired one and we pack up and go home. THEN he still usually wants to play chase the ball here at the apartment... lol. If I could only bottle up his 'gumption' and sell it, I'd make millions... hehe. I live alone so have no extra set of hands for help w/grooming.

I really lucked out with finding him! He's an awesome pooch!

thanks again for everyone's tips/replies etc.

ok so how do you express the anal glands? I know Cosmo has scooted once which was the other day, but he was pretty sick and now that he is better he has not done it since. But I would like to know how you do that. Not that I am going to do it myself, I'm just curious.

I got this off the internet:

To express your pet’s anal glands use your fingers or a thumb and forefinger to gently apply pressure on either side of the anal opening - on the outside of the glands. Press inwards and upwards and you should see the fluid being expressed.

Good luck!

Sorry, just wanted to correct myself. I could be an idiot sometimes:D

I agree, if it doesn't Need to be done, then it doesn't need to be done. Miko has to have his anal glands expressed though.

HAHA, the only time Chloe ever scooted was when she was a puppy. She was about 15 weeks old and wedidn't realize she had eaten part of a towel and she had the string stuck in her bum, we had to pull it out.......and it kept comming and comming and comming, my dad was SOO grossed out!!
And she ALWAYS drags her butt on the carpet when we pick her up from the groomers for a second or too.....I think she has to get the hidden fuzzies out of her bum. It is hilarious though, she drags the bum then drags her head on the carpet then rolls ALL over the ground snorting all the while. It is her after gromming ritual I always say hehe!

Tonight Bentley was dragging his butt and kept trying to bite it, so I looked at his butt and it was a little swollen. I have never had to express anal glands before but I have heard about it and I thought that was what was wrong with Bentley. I got a paper towel and felt of his butt and they were very swollen so I pushed on it a little. Well nothing came out so I quit. Well he kept draggin his butt and trying to bite it and I was on the computer and I smelled this horrible smell (that I have smelled before coming from him and didn't know what it was), I looked and it was draining on his coat...YUCK! I got a paper towel and pushed again and some more came out. I have never had to do that before, will I have to do it again. It still feels a little swollen but I don't want to do it anymore because I am not really sure I am doing it right and he acts like I am hurting him. He is due some more shots soon so I will just let the vet see him. Has anyone else had any problems with this. My yorkie has never had to have this done and I have never smelled that from her either. Is this going to be an ongoing problem with him? I feel so sorry for him.
