Does anyone have a problem with their Maltese biting or pulling your hair? Mia just loves to nibble on my hair and then she pulls it! I tell her NO, but she loves my hair!! I try giving her her toys, but she doesnt really like playing with them! Its weird!

I've never had that problem, I have very short hair. Do you have long hair? Maybe she likes the smell of your hair--do you use something special on it when you wash it? If this happens when you're sitting make sure you have a toy to distract her and don't let her climb up and grab at your hair. If she does it when you're standing, hold her with her front side away from you and just keep saying NO. Your baby just loves you so much!!!

Awww, Mia doesn't yet understand which are toys and which are not. Just guide her and continue to distract her with her toys. LB was mouthing my hair, hands, ankles, Kira, everything! You just have to let her know you're in charge. I thought that it would never get better, but it did. I would play with her toys to make it more appealing to her, when she saw me play with it she played with it. Good luck!

Sammy Maree, just loved playing with my hair when she was little. She would pull it so hard and it hurt. I would grab her and say " NO" and clap my hands really loud and that would usually distract her enough for me to give her a toy, if she did continue I would put her in " Time out" ( her play pen), just be firm.
I know it is hard and they are so darn cute, and when you growl you feel like a meanie, but getting your hair pulled REALLY hurts and they need to learn good play from bad play and it is your job to teach Mia that.
Good luck, she sounds like a blast.

I agree with you. They're so darn cute, and it's so hard to resist, but you have to be firm and consistent. When she gets older and stronger, and still pulls your hair she won't understand why all of a sudden she's getting punished for it when she got away with it before. This is the case with mine too. As a result, she's understanding what is good and acceptable behavior and what isn't, and as a RESULT OF THAT, she gets more and more freedom to roam around the house, and praise, and lots of other goodies. :D

I just bought 107 teenie greenies for $22.00 off the internet. How many were in your bag and what size were they? I give them to my kids and they must be little neat freaks, they are not messy when they are done with them.lol

Maybe you should teach her to react on "ouch", so that she realizes that it "hurts" when she'll pulling your hair. My Florek did this too, and the "ouch" thingy was helpful. :)

I give my kids the greenies and they love them.........I give it to them as a special treat twice a week. They're not cheap but I also use other stuff on their teeth to help keep them clean.

:thumb2: :thumb2: Yes great advice!! Nemo reacts to when I say OUCH! I say it like Im crying in pain, He must notice the tone in my voice , cause he will immediately stop and start licking me.
He never bites me hard, but he will bite a little, but the OUCH always stops him..
ANDREA~:)
I have waist length hair. Try putting your hair in a turban. Light terry cloth turbans are available at beauty supply stores. The one in Mission Valley near Pier One has them--about $6 ea.

When Kallie went through her biting stage, I read on the internet that if OUCH doesn't hurt, which it didn't with her, try yalping like a puppy, like as if she is hurting the puppy. I know it sounds funny, but it worked ! Kallie didn't stay in the biting teething stage for long at allll !! Which I was glad for, and she really wasn't that bad, the only time she was was the early mornigns, and that's what I did, it works great ! So maybe try that if OUCH doesn't work ! :)
Hair pulling. Have you gotten a turban for your hair yet? Mission Valley has a Beauty Supply (forgotten name) near Pier One. Cost about $6.00. I think the name is "In-Style"???
RE: Mia not responding to your training...Consistency is the key...the tone of your voice...repeating commands using the same words. If she still doesn't respond, give her a time out period. Walk away for 10-15 mins. Then come back and try again. You might go to a puppy training class and watch the training of puppies. All puppies can be trained--my opinion. And a Maltese seems very easy.
Also, I see that some owners use a baby play pen while they are away from home. Price around $50 or $60. The less space Mia has--around a 4 x 10 or 4 x 12 foot area, the more control you have over her. Paper at one end...bed at the other. I think before you were letting Mia out of her crate w/o her paper near her crate...and then she was doing her business where she wanted, not where you wanted her to. Babe requires his paper down in a certain manner, and if he must do both #1 and #2 back to back he won't do it on the same paper, it must be changed ASAP. He is almost trained to go outside now. I've only had him for 17 days. So he learns quickly.
Mia needs to understand you are in control. If she doesn't understand early then she'll become like Babe was--uncontrollable.
Now he is a fine little gentleman. Very easy to deal w/; patient; loves his grooming sessions each day; eats well; sleeps the entire night. I started him on a schedule...meals at the same time daily; bedtime same time; etc.
Try using soft music in the background when you are away at work. Also, remember that when you are at work Mia might be lonely for you? Also, Babe does not like any noise or he is distracted.
But remember a Maltese does get these energy bursts of almost wildness. Babe's are stopping.
It sounds like I put Babe thru Puppy Boot Camp, but I really didn't; I've just been very consistent. Maltese's are like babies, and like babies they require a schedule and training.
I know you are trying to be a good Mom, and you will be. You're new to this.
And I'm am too.

You need a time out pen. When Rocky behaves this way, clap your hands and say " NO, TIME OUT" and place him in a pen, leave him only a short period 30sec, let him out again, and continue with the time out increasing to maybe 1-2min at a time. He will soon learn that, if he behaves that way he DOESN'T get your attention ( You must ignore him and Not look at him, while he is in time out).
Good luck

What is wheat gluten?
Wheat gluten is what they have found to be tainted making all the cats & dogs sick from Menu Foods manufacture. First they thought it was rat poison now they think it is melamine. But it is found in the wheat gluten in the recalled food. I think I read that you were giving Mia NB right or switching? NB so far is safe. They are recalling some dry Iams cat food and some snacks. Just make sure what ever you are feeding Mia you stay away from Wheat Gluten in the ingredients for now. Hope this answers your question...we gotta take care of our MIA'S!:p
