Down here in Au it is compulsory to register your dog with your city. There are stiff penalties for failure to do so.
My point in asking this question is a spin off from the top 10 dogs for 2006 thread.
I think if someone had the time to compile a database from this information it would tell a better story of what was the more popular breeds don't you agree?

I actually haven't registered any of mine yet. I plan on doing that end of March when Ernie is desexed and Microchipped ( that way it is alot cheaper). That way they will have there renewal date the same time.
I will register Sammy maree and Max with me and Ernie with my mother, cause I am only allowed 2 dogs.
I do agree if it was law to register your dogs in the states, it would give a better Idea of what breed was more popular.
Did you know Bren, In Australia the Maltese is the top purebred dog to be dumped:mad: , I was shocked. This isn't in regards to Mixed breeds, only Purebred. How can you be owned by one of these babies and then dump them:mad: , makes no sense to me at all.

Bek, where did you read/hear this about the Maltese b/c I keep trying to find out if that is true or not and have yet to find it.
A few years ago, the now, long gone Burke's Backyard did a show on the Maltese and showed the ugly side of owners and their Malts and showed Maltese in a very biased unflattering way and that show claimed that Maltese were the most dumped dog. But, that was only for Sydney and from the look of the dogs they were BYB and the owner's had personalities not suited to a small companion dog at all......... IMO
If you ever get a chance to see that clip...... Apart from household's in chaos, watch, how the owner's yelled and screeched at the dogs and how the owner of one hit the Malt around the head......
From that show it was said that Maltese are hyper and yappy and impossible to train. If you get a chance to see the clip you will see very ugly owners who should not have any breed of dog let alone a Maltese.
I would like to actually see more proof from a more reliable source other than Burke's backyard as this is certainly not true in my town.
I am constantly checking my local shelter and rarely is a purebred Maltese there and if there is, it is an owner surrender by an elderly person who cannot take their Malt into a nursing home with them. Or, sadly the owner has died.
I also visit an Aussie forum just to read their rescue forum and it doesn't seem to get many maltese in their rescue list.
One thing though......... if this sort of negative statement puts BYB and Mills out of the Maltese business ...... well that can only be a good thing and is fine by me.

The only registering that we do here is thru the Rabies vaccine - there is a tag that is issued that has a vaccine number on it and thru that number, the police would be able to tell who owned that dog.

Actually , there is a continual supply of Maltese especially in N.S.W shelters . I am very involved in rescue and there are at least 5 Maltese every week in shelters , they adopt very quickly and rarely make the web sites . N.S.W is also fond of dumping Maltese x's , shih tzu's and Lhasa apsos My family has adopted Henry ( shih tzu ) , Teddy (Lhasa apso ) , Spencer ( shih tzu ) , Sophie ( shih tzu ) , Henrietta ( shih Tzu ) , Milo ( shih Tzu ) and Maudie ( Lhasa apso ) all from Sydney shelters and all the dogs were aged 12months to 9 weeks . Sydney loves to dispose of animals . Sarah

Bren, I have no Idea how to find that info I read. I did a search ahile back and went to page after page and after awhile you lost. I had a look before for you and can't find anything.
I do remember yes it was about N.S.W, we don't have alot being dumped in Brisbane ( we get maltese x sometimes), but Sydney is terrible, I had heard Victoria had problems also.
Such ashame.

Sarah, that was the point I was trying to make .......
That the dumping of Maltese in Australia is predominately in the one state
You have just said yourself that you had to go interstate for your rescues.
Based on per capita of population of all of Australia that is not a lot of "purebred" Maltese dumped in relation to other dogs ....
Okay back to the topic of this thread ;)
which was ........ is it compulsory to register your dog.

Okay so that would work the same way as our registrations. Though we do not have Rabies in Australia fortunately.
I was thinking of a database like people do each year for popular birth names of babies etc.

It is mandatory that your dog has a license which is connected to obtaining a rabies shot which is also mandatory. That is the only required shot in Florida. The rabies shot can be given in a one year shot or given in a three year shot but the license has to be bought every year!!!!! Legal requirement!! And must be worn on the dog or they can pick your dog up and place him in the dogpound! Rabies is a concern here in Florida.

In my town we have to have a rabies tag and a local town tag. I don't think my town enforces the law but I had always gotten the tag for our other dogs, so Jack has his tag too. I told the town clerk they should require a photo of the dog too that would be kept on file.
