View Full Version : new puppy and kitten playing to rough?
Emma and my kitten Jack play a lot, they really really like eachother. Jack is probly double her size, she is 4 months old, he is 5 months old.
Lastnight they were wrestling more then normal, but I was watching them, and Emma was really enjoying it. But after I noticed Jack must have gotten her with his claws a little on the face. I noticed her face look red and when i picked her up I saw she had some scratches, but she never cried once when they were playing.
Now Im worried about letting them play, I know Jack doesnt do it on pirpose, they are both playing, but I dont want Emma to get scratched all the time, and if he gets her eye that would be horrible.
Anyone else have this problem?
Should I continue letting them play?
I feel bad cause Emma has no one else to play with since my other dogs are so big, and Jack doesnt have anyone either.
Thanks!

You might want to keep an eye on them so that Emma doesn't get her eyes scratched. If she does, it will cost you a vet bill and meds.:( Plus it could affect her vision down the road, depending on how bad the scratch would be.

I don't think I would let them play together if Jack is scratching Emma and drawing blood. I am sure Jack does not mean to but it could really cause some serious problems if he gets her eye or even an infection could start with just a minor scratch!! You will make the perfect "playmate" for Emma!!!:)

I think you would have to watch them and if the playing begins to turn a little rough I would end it - but Jack could really hurt Emma especially her eyes. It may be best not to let them wrestle.

I agree with everyone. Mine play very rough but when my daughters cat scratched Mia right by the eye I made sure they were never together alone. An eye injury besides being expensive can cause serious damage.
Ok well I have been keeping them seperated when I leave the house, Emma is in her crate with a pen around it and Jack roams, he cant get to her that way.
But I am having more and more trouble trying to keep them from playing during the day, especially in the morning when both Emma and the cat are hyper. I have a spray bottle and spray Jack everytime they start wrestling, but they just dont get it. Every morning I have to fill up the spray bottle at least twice.
They just love eachother and its driving me crazy cause I cant get them to stop trying to play. I feel bad too cause all they want is to play with eachother and I keep stopping it.
Oh what am i gonna do...

Although I am not crazy about declawing a cat, if they are truly going to be best buds and you want to prevent Emma from suffering any "claw" injuries, then I say declaw the cat and Let them play! It's not Jack's fault he's a cat with claws but you really can't take the risk of having Emma seriously hurt. Just give it some thought. You will drive yourself crazy trying to keep them apart from playing............they seem to get along and enjoy each other; just worries me about the "accidental" injury Jack could do to Emma.
