Well today was a bit scarey for me.......we walked all nine dogs off leash in a circle. Toby was a little bit off beat and would not heel right next to me and was straying off from my side. I think he was licking his chops as to which dog would be his first victim. So I put him back on leash. Then I tried it again and he did fine.....go figure.

He is really doing well. I about dropped my drawers when we did the down/stay and then she had us walk OUT THE DOOR!!!!!!!!   I was almost 100% certain that he would break his command and come a running thinking I was leaving him behind and then there was also the four other dogs lined up with him "ALONE" that he had do deal with..............but he surprised me and stayed put!!! YAY

We mostly did repeats of the things we have learned in the first four weeks trying to perfect them. Toby still will not do the sit from the down position and the trainer said it was one of the hardest commands for them to learn. None of the other dogs are doing it either so if I can get him to do it, I might just win the trainer over!! :) :)

There is one "huge" German Shepherd there that is 10 months old and very friendly. I held Toby and the dog smelled him all over even on the top of the head and Toby did not even growl but I know if I had let go, Toby would have been all over him. He is getting better but has a way to go. At least there were no situations this week. AND he did go up to two people today which he normally would not. He is just timid with other people but not aggressive........so I think we are making progress with him.

It sounds like Toby is doing better and better with the other dogs.

The sit from a down is tough. In agility, we have to do a "sphinx" down (which kinda means no sit...just down).

I am glad you are enjoying the class and good for Toby!!!:hearter::hearter:

Thanks Elizabeth, I will have to try that sphinx down with Toby. You know I wasn't scared for the other dogs when Toby was off leash, I was worried that Toby would be hurt by one of them. He is just not tolerant of big dogs. I know it has something to do with his former owner. They had two big dogs and they went after him one day (this is when he was six months or less).....he didn't get hurt or bit but I am sure it put fear into him. He actually does fine on leash with smaller dogs now which is an improvement. And as I said the fact that he is downed and stays even though the other dogs are around, is a huge improvement.

I just need to work with him more and not rely just on the training at the class.:o:o:o:o:oMy Bad!:(

Sounds like he is doing great.

How much time do you spend training outside of class every week?

Not enough!:o:o:o:o :(..........I know it has a lot to do with the time away from class practicing the commands. I plan on getting in more practice this next week to get him into shape.

Landon is learning the "down" command now. He is actually doing really well at home - I hope he keeps it up in class.

I tried this morning to see if I could get him to sit from a down postion and he did it! I was happy. :)

It really does take that consistency though, doesn't it?

Consistency and practice. Toby needs just daily workouts and I think he will be find.........he is a quick learner and eager to please.
