Hello:

I'm a newbie on the forum. I begin day 6 w/ "Babe"...since I guess I'm game to master the unusual, I will be making a custom bed for him today. I'm sure many of you have done this.

I'm a little frustrated because I'm training Babe to respond to me, but 2 other family members are not following my plan...therefore, consistency is difficult.

A Maltese is new to me. Yes, they are very intelligent. I know this puppy can be trained to forget the unfortunate environment it was exposed to of extreme noise.

I've been massaging him prior to bedtime until he is nearly asleep after I've groomed him. Put some classical music on very low near him. And I pray when I leave to go home he will sleep thru the night. Observing him one night he sat and waited at a door...I assume he was waiting for me to return. But I was just sitting a few feet from him in the dark seeing what he would do.

Well I'll go now and get a few minutes sleep before we begin a new day...a better day as I tell Babe. And I know when I come in to begin the day w/ him I will receive my a.m. kisses.

Thank You all for providing me helpful info. Taking Babe in was not in my plan; I just had no options. I just want to provide the proper care...and of course all the love and reassurance I can. I'm just confused about what to do at certain times...vet visits; professional grooming; etc.

:) I know your doing the best you can. Believe me it's really not hard, you will read and search on the net and get some advice and you will do wonderful.
You already seem to be so willing so the rest is pretty simple.Take your time and dont worry it will all fall into place, you'll see:D

I think most of our dogs would sit & wait at the door till their owner returns:D

Does Babe not live with you? Is he with another family member?

I live in a guest house on the property. My parents are very elderly and can not manage Babe. He responds to me. And no I don't have space for Babe. I was not informed of Babe coming last weekend. I thought all of us would follow w/ consistency in the training. But that has not occurred. The puppy regardless of its owner becoming ill was destined to be given away. I'm just trying very hard to help Babe...let him know he is deserving of love/attention/safety. I also need a time-out from him--it is tiring some days.
