If you can afford pet insurance, I think it's a good idea. Having three furkids, well, it would get very costly for me. I have been very fortunate with not having large vet bills. I usually only have to fork out $300 for vet bills a year for all three for their shots, tests and heartguard. But I spend a lot more on food, treats, grooming supplies and now (thanks to Maggie) clothes.

So I really don't know that much about insurance but hopefull someone will be able to give you some additional help. :)

GOOD POSTING!!!

I thought about getting insurance but it is very expensive if you have more than one dog. I don't have names of companies but maybe you could Google it and find something.

Or if anyone else here knows, I'm sure they will post.

No, for one dog that would be managable. :) Let us know if you decide to go with insurance and how it works for you.

I have also started looking into insurance now that I have Jasper. Let me know what you find and I will also let you know what I find. I am going to talk to my vet and see which one they recommend.

We didn't have insurance for our first Maltese Max and boy do I wish we had!!!! He started seizures at 6 months and had them his whole life. He was on medications his whole life too. He had leg surgery and had his spleen out. The cancer returned after the spleen and we had to let him go. We spent alot of money.
When we got Jack my son said he would pay for the insurance. He didn't want to see us go through that again. We pay under $400 a year. That is including the coverage for cancer treatment. It is cheaper if you don't have that.
We have VPI Pet Insurance. You can call 1-800-540-2016 for the Customer Care Dept. and ask questions.
Good luck with deciding what you want to do.

We have VPI for Lizzie and Im not sure if we are going to renew it again
The renewal just came in and the policy has increased from $27 a month to $34. There is a lot of of fine print so read it well !

I had lizzie in to be spayed and did a complete blood panel....that is recommended and it only payed out less than $10 for the spay but covered the panel. I will go read the overview of last year and see how we made out.

I figure if you make back 1/2 of your premium its not too bad, just to be safe
for any catastrophic accidents.
Some hereditary illnesess are not covered...again read the fine print so your not surprised....I know I was !!!

i was looking at the vpi and it excludes this:

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
The diagnosis, medical management or surgical correction of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) damage or rupture that occurs during the first 12 months of the policy is not covered.

i dont really understand what that means so basically if chickies has a acl than it is not included in the insurance?

I have never had pet insurance - I have looked into some companies but decided not to. You have to read all the information for each company and understand what they will and will cover.

What I mention to people/friends who have pets is that each paycheck faithfully a certain amount (ex: 20.00) should be put aside and saved for vet visits or emergencies.

With the ACL, I think they are trying to make sure that people don't get the insurance after the injury has just happened and then try to use it. The 12 month lapse I think is a safe guard for them. I would call them and talk to a representative. Hopefully something like an ACL won't happen. Our Max had that surgery at age 9 or 10. We didn't have the insurance and boy did it cost us. I think if we had had the insurance all along back then, we would have been ok.
We got the insurance on Jack as soon as we brought him home from the shelter at 4 1/2 months.
You have to decide what is right for you, your dog and finances.
Good luck.
