I also want to say . A red flag is also when the so called breeder will not let you see the parents, not let you enter the house. There are alot of signs you just have to know them. Personally I would not get another Maltese unless I knew the pedigree, I think thats important to ask. I also realize there are smaller reputable breeders that have babies at very good prices, so you dont always have to pay 3000 just to get a solid, cute, champion sired puppy..
