I live in NewZealand and customs will not let me import Angel Eyes or any other product with anti biotic in it. Is there a product on the market that works without the anti biotic?
He is only a pet, but we do love him looking his best. He is already on omega 3 tablets, but just wondered if there was someone who had had some success with a different type of product than Angel eyes.

Angel eyes, angel glow and tylan all have antibiotics in them and that is why they clear up the staining so quickly and effectively. You didn't mention how old Piglet is???? And the above things should not be given until he has his secondary teeth anyway. Another means is to wash his face daily and I have found that a product called Spa Lavish Facial Scrub has been affective in reducing stain.........11229
I purchased it from one of MT's stores and here is the link:

Another effective method that I have personally used but is hard on the hair if done too often and if the hair is not conditioned well, is the MOM treatment which you can read about here on MT at this link, post #3:

I know I am in a minority here but I do not like to self-medicate any of my dogs although Angel Eyes and Angels Glow can now be purchased here (the UK). Our Vets refuse to prescribe tylan (in any of its derivatives) for dogs even though they accept it supposed to be a narrow-spectrum antibiotic. When my Malt had tear stains, I tried Eye Envy which is a topical treatment but wasn't as effective as daily face washing with warm water, flushing the eyes with a human eye-wash (Optrex in my case), then drying thoroughly, applying cornflour (cornstarch) to the stains and brushing it out thoroughly with a mascara brush - a clean one of course :wink5: The cornstarch should be thoroughly washed out daily - otherwise you'll get a gravy face :D
Just a quickie, in case of stains caused by saliva (around the mouth etc), a tiny pinch of Vitamin C powder mixed into their food every two or three days will help to neutralise the saliva and reduce the stains considerably. I believe cider vinegar in the water does the same thing, but it didn't work with my boy because he refused to drink the water containing it :o

I am one of those that use the apple cider vinegar in the water and all four of mine drink it and it does help considerably with future staining. But if they won't drink it, they won't drink it! I'm just glad that mine do.
It is rare that a vet will order prescriptions for hair staining here but you can buy the angel glow, angel eyes and tylan off the internet. I have used the tylan but only for a brief period as I don't like giving it over a long period of time and don't recommend doing it.

Hi
Thanks for all the tips!
I will defiantly try some of the face scrub and see if he will drink cider vinegar in the water.
Piglet is five and gets a little bit of tear staining by his eyes, I already wash his face and eyes 2-3times daily with 'professional groomer Tear stain remover' and dry him, this works up to a point.
He also already has a vitamin and mineral supplement with seaweed every other night and omega 3 every night in his dinner.
I tried for a month or so placing corn flour on his staining then brushing it off, i was really careful when doing this but he still occasionally had a sneezing fit and none of us could see a marked improvement, so i gave up!
Is it worth keeping doing this?
My friend went to America and came back with some angel eyes for her white toy poodle and the stains completely disappeared (as you say due to the anti-biotic in it) and her poodle looked so much more comfortable, i was really wondering if anyone else had the same success with a product without the anti-biotic?

I have tried another product but it didn't really help. Unfortunately the only thing that I have tried that really works is the Tylan. How bad is Piglet's staining? I use the ACV in the water also - I think it helps some with the staining but it is just a good preventative for the innards. :) People are supposed to drink some every day, too.

I tried several topical stain removers before using the Tylan and it did absolutely nothing for the staining. Once I used the Tylan, the eye staining cleared up. Wish we had more to suggest and offer you.

You still have the MOM treatment I mentioned in Post #2. It will work but it has to be used sparingly and carefully..........AND CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION the hair after each treatment.

Angel Eyes and Angels Glow can now be purchased here (the UK).
I regret that info. is now incorrect. I have checked out the sites that used to sell these products to see if they would deliver to NZ but they no longer stock them. This is what one of them said:
Angels Eyes is dead- long live Angels Delight.
Err... Actually Angels' Eyes still exists but is no longer legal in the UK because of the active ingredient- Tylosin.
Tylosin is tylan as tartrate. To be fair to them, they did not know that Angels' Eyes had been imported illegally by their wholesaler who has had a bit of a bad time with our Customs people who (so the story goes) had been tipped off by Vets treating dogs with adverse reactions (said to have been) caused by this antibiotic. Please note that nothing has been proven one way or the other - this is just the scuttle-butt among the show fraternity over here.
However, there is another product called Angels' Delight (a bit naughty that)that works differently and is also said to help to stop tear stains. As in the tylan based products it doesn't clear the stains away miraculously (they are stains, after all :() but once you start to use it new hair growth should come in and stay clean.:)
Here's a link.

I understand they will deliver world-wide but PLEASE read all the info. including the ingredients. It is also important to note that this product (as with the tylan/tylosin products) should not be fed to dogs with liver or thyroid issues as it will give false positive test results. It's also not good for dogs with pancreatitis.
Sorry to appear negative but we can't have too much information before deciding what to feed to our fluffs.:D

Good Posting Lorraine and thanks for the information.
I just want to add that any product that has an antibiotic in it should not be used more than 10 days. If the new hair growth has stains there can be another underlying problem and the dog should be checked by a vet. I also never give the suggested dose to any of the dogs, I always give a smaller dose..........and it seems to work out just fine.

Hi
Thanks for the info about the anti-biotic stain controller, I also look into everything Piglet and Useless (his sister a black cocker spaniel) eat and would never have considered it until my friend used it to great results.
I wished to do as my friend does and put a tiny sprinkle of angel eyes (or other product) on Piglet's food once every month as her poodle looks so much better, although Piglets staining is very minimal i always feel it looks really uncomfortable!!!:(

So what is the recommended dosage, Carol?

You're not being negative! :) I agree, the more info the better. There is so much garbage in most of the stuff they make for pets. More and more I am getting into the more natural products for dogs. There are so many out there we can use. I just wish there WAS a product that worked for staining besides the antibiotic ones.
