The first Maltese dog exhibited in 1873 in America was pure white with black ears. With the est. of the AKC, Maltese registered from 1874 on were solid white. The Maltese was officially accepted for registration in 1888.
The book says that the Maltese is one of the most popular breeds in the US with almost 14,000 registered every year.

I think it is the WORST mistake breeders ever made , getting rid of color . I love all the colors in my dog family group - having only white is kind of dull ( no offence intended to owners of white dogs ) . Princess Charlotte's colored ears look cool . Sarah

I like pure white but I think having a pure black maltese would have been cool too.
