I have 2 Maltese and my little male, Ben, screams when you pick him up. He also acts like it really hurts to be brushed. The little girl, Angel, is ok to pick up but my husband gave her a bath last night when all he was supposed to do was wash the poo out of her tail feathers. We were gone all day and when we got home and I saw how tatty she looked, I grabbed her and the brush. Her hair was very clumpy and she acted like I was pulling her hair out. It wasn't tangled badly but you wouldn't have known that to see her and hear her hollering.
Are Maltese sensitive to touch? Is it normal for some Maltese to yelp when they are picked up? Sylvia

I don't think that is normal. Kallie loves to be held and does not mind the brushing.............but I brush her every day so mats are seldom there. I really don't know why your maltese would yelp when being picked up unless for some reason she has a sensitive area, perhaps a bruised area??? Just guessing and giving some suggestions.

Riley's hair sometimes gets matted and we have to brush it out, which he doesn't like, but he's never yelped when we picked him up, unless if maybe he got a shot that day or something.

Question: what kind of brush are you using?
and have you brushed them since you got them?
or is it a new thing routine your doing?
im just asking trying to rule out things
donbi was 8 weeks when i 1st got her
SHE HATED THE COMB would bite my fingers
but now she tolerates it... it took about
everyday 2 times a day, since she was 8 weeks til 6 months,
then she got better at it...
now she will just chill for me if i give her a treat or a reward!
and she loves the chris christiansen brushes...
she hates everything else
and all my kids love it so im happy :)
now my other 3 kids love being brush its our bonding time!
so i dont have problems with them they will lay down and close their eyes do the full works :D

I think it's called a pin brush. They don't mind being brushed, as long as it doesn't pull too much. My husband didn't put conditioner on her after he washed her. I brush them daily cause they still have their puppy hair and you know how that will matt if it isn't kept brushed out.
I went to see the breeder today. We were on that side of town at the vets. She said she never noticed him yelping when she picked him up but her granddaughter said she had noticed it. The breeder suggested maybe he was getting fat or maybe just eaten when I pick him up and he yelps. I don't know. He is not bruised from here and I think any bruise he picked up from her house would have healed by now. She suggested taking him to see the vet and I guess we will. I want to wait a few more days and watch him. He is better than when we first brought him home, maybe a few more days will make a big difference. Sylvia

If the vet says everything is fine make sure next time you wash him to use the conditioner afterwards. :) The oil is for esy combing and for moisturizing his hair.

I have never heard Kallie yelp. She loves being held and cuddled. When I brush her she just lays there and does nothing, the same when she is at the groomers, she doesn't even move! It's wonderful, because it makes it so easy on my groomer, especially when she is drying her, the heat makes Kallie fall asleep ! :)
I would get it checked by the vet though, because something must be hurting to make him yelp
Hope everything is ok :)

Maybe talk to the vet and see if he can check them. Do they act like it's hurting them when you touch their skin or just when you brush them? As mentioned before, maybe they have a sensitive area?
