Hello everyone,

I get on this site every once in awhile, but just officially joined today! I love reading everyone's insight on all the various topics discussed here. I am a member of YorkieTalk, but now need advice on maltese.

First of all, I am looking to add a maltese to our family. I can pay up to $1500, but would prefer to stay in the $1000 range. I would like to be able to buy a healthy, sound maltese with a good temperament that will mature to 6lbs or under but still have money set aside for any emergencies or unexpected costs that may come up. As I quickly learned after purchasing my yorkie from whom I thought was a breeder, and I later found that she was a broker for puppymills!! Our yorkie is the absolute love of our lives, and I wouldn't change it for the world, but I do not want to end up giving money to those awful places ever again. He came to us very sick, and we almost lost him a few times.

Anyway, I have called several newspaper ads, but have had no luck. The people that I have talked to have prices way below $1000, and seem good-hearted, but don't really know a whole lot about the breed, and I don't think I can take the chance. I want an educated breeder who breeds for the betterment of the maltese. I have done a lot of research online, but all the show breeders who have good reputations have their puppies listed for $2500 and up. I guess my question is, is it possible for me to find a healthy, sound, puppy with a good temperament that will be 6lbs or under?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Malteseluv

Hi Welcome to MT:D

I do think you will get a male for $1500, it depends on the line of the breed though from responsible breeders.

Wow, great! Thanks to both of you. I'm glad to hear that this isn't going to be completely impossible. Those breeders look great, and the puppies are beautiful! I will be writing them both emails to get more information. :) I'll keep you updated on my progress. And if anyone has any other tips or ideas, let me know. :)

:welcome: to MT. If you go to the thread "Info on Breeders" (you can do it through Search) I listed some info on getting lists for breeders. Hope it helps and good luck on being owned by a wonderful Maltese puppy.

Hi,
You can also try Tajon. She has boys in that price range (1500) and her babies are gorgeous !!

Good for you for doing your research! Newspaper ads are definately not the way to go. I think the price range depends on whether you want a boy or girls--girls are usually more expensive, even with top breeders, all about supply and demand I guess. I think you could definately find a boy from a good breeder for around $1500.
