which is better a collar or a harness for longer coated Malts?

I like the collar.........the harness makes tremendous mats in Kallie's coat.

We have a harness for Jack. We started Jack out with a collar but our obedience trainer recommended the harness over a collar for a small dog. My vet also likes the harness because the malteses' throat is very sensitive and pulling on a leash with a collar can actually damage their throats. We still have his collar on with all his tags tucked inside a pouch.
Jack does very well with the harness and we have no problem with him hurting himself.

Yes Cheryl, I was told the same thing which is why I am nervous of growing Scrappy's coat out if it is going to matt like he is from the harness.

Hence all my questions lol

I don't want a collapsed trachea and Scrappy does so enjoy a walk.

I am weighing up long coat = collar or Teddybear cut = harness.

I've never had my dog with the long coat. They have always had the puppy cut. I love seeing other owner's dogs with the long hair, but for me I really love the puppy cut .

That is so TRUE what your vet said about the collars! Collars can cause problems. But I wear collars on mine as they've been trained that when the leash is on........they are not permitted to pull. I wear leashes on them when we are travelling and they have to go potty or when we go to petshops. It took a lot of work and training to get them to that point. But my kids are not puppies either. But any kind of harness I wore on them, made knots and mats in their hair. I use the collar strictly for safety reasons when we are in the car out in public.

That's great that your babies know not to pull. When Max was alive we had a very bad experience with a collar when out for a walk. We were in front of an apartment building and this idiot lady opened the building door and her dog came rushing out and went straight for Max. Natural instincts kicked in and I pulled up so hard on Max's leash he actually became airborne and landed in my arms. This crazed dog tried to get at him and I'm kicking it with my leg and not trying to get bit. The women comes out and says " he won't hurt you or your dog!!!!!!! He just likes to jump and play." With that she proceeded to walk her dog off-leash down the block. Jack was so shaken he never wanted to go for walks again. We have a town ordinance about dog's being on a leash at all times when off property, but some idiots don't obey the laws.

Wowser, that must have been horrifying!!!! Your poor Max....I can see where that would have traumatized him! I would have done the same thing you did out of instinct. I think the woman needed a thump on the head!

We have a leash law here as well. All dogs are to be on leashes unless they are in your fenced yard. But if they are in your backyard/frontyard and there is no fence, they HAVE to be on a leash. But not everyone obeys that law here either.

I watch my mom's maltese/shih-tzu all the time, he's my yorkie's BFF :)
I always attach the leash to his harness to walk him instead of to his collar, so that it doesn't cause trachea problems. But we take the harness off as soon as we come inside, so his hair doesn't usually mat since it's only on for short periods of time. Hope this helps :)

So do you walk Princess Charlotte using a collar?

I am so scared of using a collar and yet I don't want a matting drama and I don't want to stop his walks as we both enjoy them so much.

I had a similar experience as Cheryl. One day I was walking home from my boys school with Sammy maree, when this big boxer came running at us, out of instinct I pulled up on the lead and Sammy was in my arms. I turned my back to the dog and held sammy tight, the dog walked away.

Thank goodness Sammy always wears a harness, she wasn't hurt by me pulling her up. If she had have had a collar on I could have done some serious damage.

So your Answer Bren, I us a harness, It makes me feel they are safe, so of course they are all in a puppy cut. I think it is a personal choice, nothing wrong with either.

Yes , Princess Charlotte has a collar , Josh is a vet and has never even treated a collapsed trachea except in elderly pets . Princess Charlotte is tiny and can wriggle out of any harness . Sarah

I use a collar on Poptart. He is on the bigger size and he doesn't pull anyways. I did have a step in harness on him, one I bought at a pet store. And it broke the hair and stained his hair black from where the harness was. His hair is still growing back and you can definately tell where the hair was breaking.
But for all the others I use harnesses. Have you ever tried a silk harness?? I used them on my yorkie Scampers and he has long hair. It worked great, no matting or breaking or staining!! Now I just have to order silk harnesses for all the others. Once I order them, Poptart will go back to wearing a step in harness. I just feel it is much safer for them!!

Bren,
Perri wears a collar when we are out and about, but for walks he is always in a harness for the trachea reasons. I see you know about that, so that's good. He is in a midlength cut--about 6 inches. I use a silk step in harness and have never had a problem with matts from it--I highly recommend it and I'd be happy to put you in touch with the lady who makes them over here if you want. Also, I've had to quickly pull him up just like others on here, and a harness really comes in handy there too. I don't think you should have to choose between a long coat or walks--I think you just need the right harness. :)
P.S.--I remember you and Scrappy and it's good to "see" you again!

If I were to use a collar at all, it would be strictly for decoration or tags. I started with Yorkies & we are always told to use harnesses not to harm their tracheas & so far, my Maltese isn't any larger than my Yorkie so I just have stayed with the harnesses. I have had to jerk one up real quick too and I would hate to have tried that with a harness.:maltese7:
