So Gracie got a good hair brushing with the slicker brush last night. I am not very good at brushing and to be honest, I only do it a few times a week. She was not at all happy. She attacked the brush every chance she got. I thought she was going to knock her teeth out. My groomer says she never does this but I don't believe her. LOL

Do you use the slicker brush for her entire body???? I only use it on a rare occasion on their feet. The rest of the time I use a pin brush which is more gentle on the skin and hair. I harp on everyone about the "daily burshing routine" as being the best way to keep the hair looking nice and healthy and for getting them use to being brushed regularly. The brush is an important factor too in keeping the hair healthy and free of breaks. Here is Kallie when I kept her long (just got too hot to keep that long in Florida).

If you plan on letting their coats grow out, a daily brushing is a MUST. :) I brush Bella out once and sometimes twice a day and we fix her topknot at least once a day as well. And I highly recommend getting a good pin brush... a slicker brush can be very hard on their coat and skin. LOL.. I think I just pretty much repeated what Carol just said.... lol

ouch.. Slicker brush look painful to me.

I use the pin brushes from CC or Madan.
Pani will let me brush her down. She tends to lay on her tummy everytime I does that.
Later I work it out with the butter comb just to get any small knotts out.

oh and dont forgot to spray with some kind of conditioner or water before you brush her hair. Thats help alot!

A slicker brush is all I have right now. I am waiting to get rich so I can get one of the CC brushes. You all gave me great advice about brushes, just playing the waiting game. I guess it hurt her. She has short hair and I am not going to grow hers long cause her hair is curly. I am growing the top of her hair for a top knot.

No wonder she growled and attacked the brush. I guess it didn't feel good. I am a bad mama.

Has anyone ever tried one of those slicked brushes with the plastic bristles? They sell them in the cat aisle at Target. This is what I use on Cooper when he gets long and unruly--he is a Yorkie with a cotton coat,,,it doesn't seem to bother him, and it works! I bought one with metal bristles and they yelped like I was killing them, and I just used it on thier legs, so it went in the TRASH :)

Hmmm...good thinking Natalie....so whoever gets me in the GE, I need a brush, clippers, comb, blowdryer, curved shears, and longer hair for my babies topknots......j/k, LOL.

I think will put off the CC brush and go ahead and get a Madan brush if you all think that would be better and not hurt them. Is there a particular place online that I should buy one?

P.S.- I watched two grooming dvd's and both groomers used a metal slicker brush!

Yeap slicker brush can damage and break the hair I only use it on the feet. If you want a madan brush email this lady she sells them for less than $20.00 c.fernking@comcast.net and in pretty colors.

So do my groomers but I bring my own to the groomers :D

I just sent an email!! I can afford 20 bucks for a good brush. I don't want to hurt my babies anymore. *sniff*

Mine didn't like brushing with a slicker brush either and when I got a pin brush they do a lot better..not great yet but a lot better.

Abbie's breeder was showing me how she uses slicker brushes on tangles...instead of brushing like normal (on the top of the dog on her back), brush from the underside (with the bristles facing outward and the handle towards the skin). It only works on longer hair I guess.

I hope that makes sense.

It took me forever and a lot of patience to get Diddy use to being brushed. He would fight me to no end! Here is a pic of my fiance trying to brush him when he was younger. It looks scary but he just wanted to play with the brush:D Now he just sits there and actually loves being brushed. I say "Let's do the belly now" and he rolls over.:D

Teddy was my first dog that ever would run to you if you had any brush or comb in your hand. He loved being brushed!!! Jasper and Emme think it is playtime and they try to eat it...so we do a little brushing every night so they will get used to it.

My very fat cat LOVES to be brushed. I use a slicker brush on him and he pushes his head into for more, more, more....cats shed so bad. After I am done with him, I can knit a mans 2XL sweater with what came out of the brush.

My cat loves to be brushed, too. I use the dog's CC brushes on her and I swear, she would let me brush her for HOURS. I know what you mean about the tons of hair that comes out. If only cats didn't shed...
