View Full Version : harness tangles
I love taking walks espically since its fall. The foilage around here in va is a bit slow so we are going again this weekend and the following. We usually go saturaday and sunday because we take the boys on saturaday and the girls on sunday. Anyways I have a question for the long coat mommies out here... What do you do when you take your babies for a walk. I wrapped maddie up which was fine but her step in harness made her matt. Any suggestions? I dont want to cut her down, but I feel bad if she doesnt get to go on walks with us...
Yes we have a stroller but the walks we do are sometimes hikes
Just curious, if I put her in a shirt would that help?

Im not a show mommy (just a pet mommy) but mitzys hair is pretty long.. its about 4 or 5 inches.. i dont have any problems with matting but i keep the inside upper parts of her underarms shaved so they dont mat.. im not sure if that an option for you?? Its just that id rather not comb the painful mats out of her armpits since we walk everyday and its a simple solution for us both.
Im not sure a shirt would help.. have you tried a leather harness? I used to have one for mitzy and it never matted but got chewed up lol im eager to learn what others do

From my experience, a shirt would cause even more matting.... or at least it would with my Bella and she's in full coat. You are better off just sticking with the harness and just being extra careful.

Jadey have you tried the silk step ins from Cindy? The shirt will mat them even more. If you haven't tried Cindy's I would. She is Chattiemom here and on YT.

I've never had a problem with tangles until yesterday. I took two of my Yorkies for a walk and when we got home, Kaya's long hair was tangled around the front middle section of the harness. (like in the middle of her chest):confused: I have no idea how that happened.
I think a tee underneath would definitely help. I may try that next time. Or I may try a different style of harness. I have a couple of different ones I can try.
Let us know what you find that works for you!

This is what i use now instead of the leather of nylon harnesses and they work great!
Thanks everyone :)
Thank you for your sweet comment!!! And thanks for telling me the shirt would be a bad idea too~ Maggie, do you have the silk step in harness? Does it really help?

You really think a shirt would mat more? Are we talking about armpit tangles or elsewhere on the body? I guess for Kaya'a tangle that I mentioned, the shirt would work, but maybe not for the pits? Hmmmmm.
her shoulder areas seem to matt like crazy whenever we use a harness and it drives me NUTS!!!

Oh yes, I do.... lol... when I've tried to put clothes on Bella, her hair matts and tangles horribly everywhere!!! Armpits, chest, neck.... the last time I put a dress on her, she got so tangled that I thought I was going to have to cut her down. But, with a little time and patience and lots of Ice on Ice, I was able to get her brushed out. That's the last time I ever attempted to dress her again. It's either full coat or clothes....and the two don't mix! LOL!

I NEVER EVER cut a matt out!!! I use the cowboy magic on the matt, wait 10-15 minutes and slowly begin pulling apart as much as I can with my fingers and then use a small comb to start separating the matt. It is a bit oily at first but if you just use a little at a time it does not make it visibly oily. JMO
The "key" of course, is to brush out the hair daily........and catch the matts early before they turn into matts that are deep into the fur and close to the skin. Those are really tuff to get out and most end up cutting them out. A lot depends on the coorperation of the dog also. So daily grooming really "conditions" them and helps them accept the whole process. Mine know they get brushed every day........so they are really easier and more accepting of the grooming and it truly is less time in the long run just doing a brush out rather than fighting with matts. Of course the end result is there are a lot less matts and the grooming becomes enjoyable to them. Mine only get matts because they play together, grabing at each other's coats. Toby does not get matts but he gets what I call snarls at the ends of his hair. A little cowboy magic or another leave-in conditioner mixed with some water in a spray bottle helps get those snarls out. They all get sprayed every day when I do the brush out. Hope this helps.:)
