Why am I having issues w/ Babe at times maintaining his attention? I know he is now an 8 1/2 mo. old puppy...and I do use the "time-out" method.

He is capable of being alone in the area I have him. No barking. He just sits and waits for me. He doesn't know that I am watching him however.

But when I return from being outside he sometimes will remain still, and other times he acts wild. I thought I had resolved the problem. Could teething be the problem? And remain the problem for a while.

Clapping my hands and saying "no" is not always working. I'm wondering if he suffered some hearing loss from being w/ his previous owner. He seems to be able to hear me whisper to him. And when I have little talks w/ him when I hold him he listens. I have never experienced a training problem w/ a puppy. My previous dog an Afghan never went through these problems. He skipped the puppy phase quickly.

I try and get him to take a couple naps during the day. Sometimes he does, and I think this helps. I am questioning if he is sleeping at night. I'm not near the area where he is. I'm in a guest house...he is in the main house. Should I stay w/ him a night to see what he's doing to understand his behavior some days?

Thank You

Just like a human child their attention Span isn't for very long. He is still a puppy so it will take some time.
Nemo is a year and a half and he still acts like a puppy from time to time.
Maybe at night he is not getting enough rest, I would stay with him at night just to see if this is the problem.
Good Luck,

I don't understand quite what you mean...Attention span?? Do you mean he is excited to see you when you come back in?

Yeah, I am quite confused too. Cause Kallie goes nuts when any of us come in the house, but it is just becuase she is so so excited to see us, once she gives us her hugs and kisses she is fine! I am a little confused what you mean by attention span though ? :)

Kallie is four years old and Toby is 15 months old and they are maniacs when we come home after being away. We usually ignore the behavior and take them outside to potty as sort of a diversion from the maniac behavior. Then we bring them back in, give them their treat and by then they are calmed down a bit and we give them loving attention. It was so hard to ignore them at first when they were so excited and happy to see us but our little ritual seems to be working quite well.

With Babe, he is just that, a babe.............he is just young and exciteable. He obviously is getting very attached to you and is very happy to see you. You best hope he always stays that excited about seeing you......means he loves ya!!!:smlove2:

I too, am a bit confused about the "attention span" comment, could you clarify that for us?

I think your doing a fantastic job with Babe, and I am so glad he is settling into your home. I also think you need to relax a little, he is only 8mths and is still a puppy, things will come in time. Mine go NUTS when I come home from being out, and sometimes when I come back in from hanging out the washing, I luv it,It shows how much they luv there mummy. When it comes to training, I offer no more than 5 mins at a time and 3 lessons a day, I find that plenty and they stay interested.

My advise would be to relax and enjoy the puppyhood of babe, they grow up so fast. :smlove2:
