View Full Version : Babe May Have Suffered Hearing Loss from Previous Owner...
Attention Span Issue Cont'd:
I'm wondering if Babe suffered some loss of hearing from the environment he was in previously? A blaring T.V.
I can clap my hands close to his ears and he doesn't move.
The attention span issue...Yes he gets excited to see me. Again, I don't live in the main house where he is, but in a guest house on the property.
The problem is if he hears the slightest sound he is distracted and stops whatever he was doing...playing; eating; etc.
The Afghan I had a very long time ago didn't have this problem.
Babe I also think is not sleeping at night. Instead he is waiting for me to return. So he's sitting by the door. I try and get him relaxed for his bedtime before I leave. I placed a radio w/ classical music on very low for company, but I learned by Mother was turning it off. So the other family members are not helping w/ my training method.
I actually am relaxed w/ him. Very patient. I think he is trying very hard to adjust. If I could have the main house alone w/ him for a week or two I think I could resolve the issues. He does require an environment of complete silence. And he is in need of sleep. I encourage him to nap several times a day, but he won't. I personally don't have the space for him.
Thanks

WHy dont you take him to the Vet to see if his hearing is okay or not?
I really dont know what to tell you:confused:
You say if you clap your hands "He doesn't move" then you say he is distracted if he hears the slightest sound:confused: How? I don't understand that! If he couldn't hear you in his ear how can he get distracted from the slightest sound?

Yes I'm going to take him to the Vet ASAP. My statement comes from evaluating him more the past couple days.
Thanks

Sorry I can't help either, I am with Andrea and am confused:confused: , Are you facing him when you clap?, or behind, to the side, he ,maybe deaf in only one ear. Sorry I can't help:confused:
I'm between a rock and a hard place. The previous owner (my Aunt) thinks Babe can be returned to her "if" she does return home.
My Aunt is well into her 90's. After suffering a broken hip there is no way she can manage Babe or any kind of a pet.
My Aunt is a very selfish person. I can remember for over 30 yrs. her owning dogs w/ discipline issues--jumping; barking; biting; scratching; etc.
One day she'll phone and state that Babe is ours; the next day she wants him back. I have not approached her regarding what is the best option for Babe. I'm waiting to hear where my Aunt will be living. Her house or???
I also have elderly parents that don't understand why Babe requires extra attention. He is very much like an 8 1/2 mo old. baby. Adjusting to a new environment. So at this point I've been a Nanny. Which is fine. Prior to my Aunt being released from the convalescent hospital, I will speak to her very bluntly and state my opinion of where Babe should live. I posted that Babe was taken to my Aunt by my parents recently. He didn't know her. This is when she stated he should remain w/ me. However, my Aunt is sedated--so she has no memory of what she's saying.
I'm taking it day by day. My primary concern is for Babe.
I know this family seems odd--no it's just like anyone elses.
I hope I clarified things a bit?

I think I understand what you're saying about clapping and him not even flinching, and then later him hearing some sound and jumping up. When my yorkie was a puppy, I too wondered if maybe he had a slight hearing problem because I could say his name over and over, and he wouldn't listen, he wouldn't even turn his head, but would hear another ambiguous noise. Turns out he was fine, so now I call it selective hearing. I would definitely get his hearing evaluated by the vet just to make sure, but I don't really know what to tell you. My yorkie stopped doing that, I think it was a stage?? It didn't last very long. Good luck!

okay!
im glad i read this post :)
it answered a lot of my questions on the other post i replied too!
sorry! :)
1.) go to the vet! about the sound thing only they can tell you honestly but i hope everything is fine.
2.) wait do you have a written document from her or does she even have a written document (ownership of babe)?
if not just register babe under your county!
DO IT :D
its just some kind of proof... sorry i just wish he stayed with you :)

Yes I agree with Jadey register her quickly in your name that way if anything gets a little sticky down the track you will have proof of how long she has been with you.
Go to the Vet ASAP and get a thorough going over of Babe.
Maybe there are too many distractions for Babe so try something like a clicker to train her with. something different from your voice. I am softly spoken and I had trouble early with Scrappy listening to my commands.
Good luck
Thanks to all...Yes on Monday I have an appt. w/ the Vet; and I also will register him in my name in my county. I thought of the registration issue before.
Prior to my Aunt being released from the convalescent home, I will speak w/ my Aunt. Explain about what is in the best interest for Babe. If she insists on having a dog, I will go to my local shelter and bring her an older dog that would enjoy being a companion dog. A larger breed. However, I will instill in my Aunt before going to the shelter the Do's and Don'ts about having a pet.
If she does not agree to the terms no dog.
Re: Babe's hearing...it seems to be selective. Yes distractions do exist...and I will try a clicker--excellent idea!
Thank You All...You are All Very Special!:o
