When Babe arrived 23 days ago, w/n a few days I was able to groom him easily just prior to him napping.

Now he just wants to play, and won't cooperate.

I give in...we play a few mins...he still won't settle down.

I give him a Time-Out time.

Any suggestions to make this task easier. I also, provide him his favorite chew toy (a Nylabone). I've tried a few treats. I felt grooming him when he was napping was not fair to him.

I also have a mat that he knows means its grooming time. From having an Afghan years ago, I know the earlier a puppy is exposed to daily grooming the better as they grow up for cooperation.

This puppy has not received any training by the previous owner at all. He's now 9 mos.

Help!

Are you putting him up on a table? That works best for us. And saying no then redirecting over and over and over. :fainted: :tongue7: If he's biting the brush or something, you can spray bitter apple on it and that works miracles. As he gets older, it will get better. He is still quite the puppy.

I put a towel on a table and groom mine on it. It works great. I agree with Jodi, he'll get better as he ages. One other thing you might start is tell him it is grooming time when you put him on the table and have everything "ready." Then just give him 10 minutes sessions doing a section at a time and increase the time as he accepts the grooming procedure. Toby almost falls asleep now when I groom him and Kallie sits still but it takes me longer with her because she has a whole lot "MORE" hair!:D

Okay my yorkies were bad, we are tlaking screaming, biting, trowing themselves around. Very bad.

So when I decided to learn pet grooming and started reading I got some really good advice,

With every grooming session YOU start the session and YOU end the session. Everytime you give up because the behaviour has escalated they win and know they must fight harder the next time to make you stop.

For dogd that you want to train groom DAILY. Only 5 mins, same rountine every time, start at hind feet, tail, body, belly, front feet and head. Kepp comb over. Little by little. When they behave for a nano second pat them.
When they flip around set them back up standing correctly and start again.

My guys were NASTY when it came to feet. I trimmed one toe, everyday a tiny bit. After 4 months they gave up (can you say persistance?)

The first month was bad, they tried every tirck and then they started to behave. Now we groom once a week and they behave like pros. It was well worth the effort!!

Those feisty little buggers! Glad they do well for you now. I have never experienced such a puppy tyrant as my yorkie Tinkerbell. She's great now too though. Glad they grow out of that stage.
