One of my co-workers at the school told me yesterday they got a dog, a female 6 month old Jack Russell Terrier. They live in an apartment complex and they were out walking their b-i-l's dog and these 2 young people come up to them and asked them if they wanted this dog!!!! They were just giving it away!! She says they paid big bucks for this dog, but now didn't want it anymore. They moved out of the complex to another state.
So, they took the puppy and she has asked me for some suggestions on crate training, barking, toys, sleeping, etc, etc.
They love her already, but they are having some issues with the crate---sleeping, and barking.
Has anyone here ever owned a J.R. or know some one who has?
Any help would be great.

I never had one but they sure are cute!! I have heard that they are very hyper dogs. Here are some videos about them.

My neighbor has one. VERY HYPER! Probably going to need a lot of exercise. I hear their destructable too (but you know how rumors can be) so maybe something she can chew on?? My neighbors would rollerblade with theirs. 12lb jack russell would pull a 190lb man on roller blades LOL

I think the biggest thing is gonna be exercise and good obedience with this breed. Our neighbors was a delight and so funny. LOVED tennis balls too

My son had a Jack Russell and she was very very smart but very very hyper when crated. She LOVED to run and could she ever run fast!!!!! They lived with us for three months and I exercised her a lot and paid a lot of attention to her and she calmed down. They just have an active mentality and need to be worked, played and exercised A LOT!!!! But I will repeat, they are very smart and very loyal dogs!!!

That's what I heard too, that they are very energetic dogs and need a lot of exercise to get them tired.

You know, I was watching "It's Me or the Dog" and Victoria used the coolest thing to interest a couple of hyper labs. She used this bubble blower thing and filled it with bacon flavored bubbles. The dogs went nuts over it! I can just see a hyper dog being thrilled with something like that. Would probably be great for exercise and keeping a dog interested in something. I don't really need something like that for my two, they are lazy butts most of the time, but it could be great for a Jack Russell.

I have only personally known one Jack Russell, but he was a honey.
So smart. He had a way of looking at you to get you to do what he wanted you to do. (Let's see, does that sound like any other breed we all know?)
He craved activity, could not get enough, was never tired, just wanted to go, go, go.

JR's are very hyper. I think more than just a lot of walking, I think your friend should research the breed and find what they were bred to do and try and form some kind of way to stimulate that instinct. She could probably get her into agility or something to get her energy out and stimulate her.

Thanks, I'll pass along the info from you guys.
They put the crate in the bedroom and she slept all night, not a sound. She didn't like being in the kitchen by herself.
