Ok guys I've finally gotten Jake walk trained with his gentle leader but Mitzy is still a mess!!
I was wondering if anyones used any types of training collars? I've tried the gentle leader and the pulling harness and no success yet.. I watch a lot of dog whisperer and he always uses those basic "dog show leads" (idk what their called) but they just loop around the top of the head. I'm worried to try it but I think its me last option. She pulls so hard! She worse than my big dog :(
I'm wondering too if it will be ok to use STRICTLY for training until she's learned heel and not to pull. Or do you think it will be to harmful? I'm thinking because it will be used to control the head and not to pull on the neck it will be ok but I don't want to cause any permanent damage either..
Also do your dogs wear collars and tags? Like everyday not walking.. Mitzy never has she's always naked (all my babes are chipped) but I saw my cousin has his dachsaunds wearing one so it made me wonder is it ok for everyday use to wear tags??

I used the gentle leader with Toby as he was really dog aggressive and it went around his muzzle and clipped just behind his head but never put any pressure on his neck. It was very useful and did keep him in line with the heeling exercises and aggression. But in the end I used the pinch collar on him and it only took one pull for him to realize that I was in control but it did go around the neck........but he was a changed dog after that and I was able to work him around other dogs regardless of their size with no issues "OFF LEASH." I haven't used any other kind of lead or collar so you have my expertise input........very limited.:p

Personally, I wouldn't use anything around my small dog's necks. They are just too delicate. Even up behind the ears, I would be afraid of something happening.
Mine do not wear collars - again, I am afraid of the collar getting caught on something, even if it is a break away collar.
I guess I would keep using the gentle leader or the other one you have. How about trying it in a confined area to do some training first before going out for a walk? I think I would have a hard time getting mine to get used to heeling at first with all the distractions of the outdoors, too.

The gentle leader doesn't do anything for Mitzy at all. We've been using it for months. When I start a training aid I do it in the backyard first then when she is good we go on a walk and everythings different. Today I tried looping the leash that was connected to her harness around her neck like cesar does and a DRAMATIC change. No choking no pulling no fighting... So idk if ill continue that or not
I think ill try the prong collar as a last resort if she doesn't improve. She's almost 2 and walks like a maniac! Its embarassing :(

Be really, really careful with the prong collar if you use it, ok? The obedience classes at the Humane Society here won't let anyone use choke chains or prong collars on their dogs in the classes.

When I went to class at the local Canine Training Club back when I had my poodle..........chokers were the rave for "all" dogs. I did use one but had never heard about some of the damage they could do to the trachea of small dogs but she lived to be 16 years old and never had any problems, just old age. With Toby, I only had to pull on the pinch collar once and he was a changed little boy. He did yelp the first time I used it but I never heard another yelp out of him after that and really never had to pull on it again. He recognized there were consequences for his unwanted behavior. I put the pinch collar around my wrist and gave it a good jerk before I ever used it on him and was confident that it would not injure him but then he was never a puller either when we walked. So, yes, I would be careful with using the pinch collar but it is amazing how quick they learn to behave. It's a personal decision and one that only you can make. You might want to see if they have them at your local petstore and try it on "in" the store and see how she reacts.

Ill be super careful. She doesn't even wear collars so a prong collar would be very scary for me even on Jake!!
I think ima continue with cesars way and if she doesn't improve well see.. But this way she can keep the harness on and slip out of the "U". Thats what ima call it cause its just U shaped when it goes around her head. It doesn't tighten or anything, it just keeps her head up its hard to explain. But its like taking a leash folding it in half and putting her head through it then you hold the 2 ends and I can still clip it to her harness, its great too cause then she has to walk behind me and Jake which is her biggest problem

Dog training collars are designed to be used as training tools only. These are not meant to be used as long term discipline. As with training any animal, some respond to different techniques, and may require alternate methods of training.
All good training collars have the capability of multiple stimulation levels; be sure to always start with the lowest level.
