I have a question...

With yorkies there is a huge weight controversy...the fad is smaller is hipper but for the educated folk it can be infuriating when someone who does not know the dangers of a "teacup" yorkie gets one and then complains of hypoglycemia, vet bills and worse case scenario puppy died and 'know one told them...'. As for myself I try to educate people.

When I run into people who also have yorkies (there are tons around here), the first question is "how much do they weigh?", the yorkies I groom are anwheres from 4 lbs to 12 lbs, not too many tiny ones (long story for another day but I have two light weights 3 & 4lbers) tons of large ones.

And most yorkie fanatics know the best way to rile yorkie enthusists is to mention how you want a teacup yorkie soooo bad to put in your purse and baby, and dressup.....

Now is the same with Maltese?
The very few I groomed; one was 15 lbs and I wondered...and the other was 5 lbs.
Is the same teacup controversy go with these guys too?

Not sure if anyone here has ever referred to a maltese as a teacup. Some have really small ones but others of us have the "more to love" size maltese. My girl weighed in at 10.5 lbs but she is in full coat and we all know how much hair weighs, right? My Yorkie was 4 lbs at six months and is now 6 lbs at 15 months old. I think when the term "teacup" is used, it is a term used to get your attention! JMO

I feel it's where you get your pup. The norm for a Maltese is 4 to 7pds. Nemo is from a pet store which means he is originally from a puppy-miller, so they don't care what they breed together to them it's all about the money. Nemo is 10 pds. Most of my friends who have gotten their Maltese from reputable breeders have dogs that are anywhere form 3 pds to 7 pds, they can however get bigger, but not much and rare.
Most reputable breeders will tell you how much the pup will be, my next one will be from a reputable breeder. Nemo means the world to me and I could care less if he did weigh 15 pds, however for my next one I would like to stay in the 5 pd range.

I think it is the case with any toy breed. People want a teeny tiny everything. It is a huge fashion symbol and maybe they even think it would show their financial status.
Did you know there is even such a thing called a mini kitty?

From Maltese Magazine: Editors of Dog Fancy
This quote comes from a breeder in Highland Park Ill, "There is no such thing as a 'teacup Maltese'. The whole teacup phenomenon is a horrible thing because the breed is already small, but the tiny ones tend to have many health problems, from hydrocephalus [water on the brain] to liver shunts [abnormal veins that result in failure of the liver to metabolize toxins and brain inflammation]."
They often have the Chihuahua-esque, apple-domed skull and an open fontanel, a skull shape that isn't conformationlly correct for the Maltese.
When you get a dog down to 2 pounds, nothing develops like it should. The heart is too small, the liver is too small.

So, a owner must decide if they want all this and huge vetinary bills just to be fashionable and pay a huge sum just to get one, or have a Maltese that is around the standard size of 7 pounds and be healthy.
My first Maltese was 11 pounds and my dog now is 10 pounds. He's healthy, very sturdy and strong. That's all an owner can ask for.
