Hi All:

Babe is doing better during grooming sessions; limiting a session to 15 mins.

The one issue I need advice on is what brand name nail clipper to buy.

His nails grow quickly, and I can see will require trimming every 7-10 days.

I'm afraid to trim his nails, but will need to learn quickly.

Have any of you used a human tempered glass nail file on your furry kids? On a human it files nails quickly and seems to seal the ends.

Also, what approach do you pros use to pluck the hairs from inside the ears?

Can you provide info. please?

I hate to take him to the groomer if I can learn to manage him at home.

Thank You

Personally, I use the nail clippers on LB that kind of look like scissors, it's like the one pictured. When I'm brave enough, I prefer clipping her nails during her bath since her nails are softer during that time. For LB, I don't file her nails since to me they are delicate. During our walks, her nails file themselves. As for the hair plucking on her ears I just use my fingers. I send LB to the groomer's every 4-6 weeks for the works.

I use the cat scissor clippers for mine. They have such small nails that the small cat clippers work great. As for plucking the hair, you find the hair that is inside the ears and you pluck it out. They even have a powder you sprinkle on first that helps you grip the hair better so plucking the hair will be faster and easier. Your dog may yelp the first few times you do it. Some never yelp and some yelp every time even though it doesn't really hurt them much.

Can you tell me where you purchased the scissors? We're in the same city--San Diego.

The hair plucking in the ears--have you ever used the powder prior to doing this?

I'm new to all of this.

Also, what groomer are you using locally?

Lastly, are you using a wrap harness on your dog? I'm trying to locate one.

Babe can be a wiggle worm...he never received any training previously. So I'm trying to each day teach him small things.

Yesterday he damaged the carpet. Have you ever used a baby play pen? Babe is nearly 9 mos. old now so the play pen seems late to use, but
it maybe necessary to keep an eye on him.

Sadly, he is only responsive to me...if I'm not around he does his mischief.

Thank You

I got those nail clippers from Pet People. Go to www.petpeople.com to check for locations. I use a regular harness and there is one harness that I use from time to time which prevents them from pulling, I have it pictured below and that I got at PetCo.

I've never used a baby play pen, but I have a baby/doggy gate that I use to block her from going into the bedrooms which is the only room with carpet. My other rooms have wood floors with area rugs.

I use PetSmart in Murphy Canyon Road as my groomer's and they do a good job following instructions. They charge anywhere from $40-$50 for the works.

I have never used powder while I pluck her hair ears.

Good Luck,

After Babe arrived, I took the metal fencing corral and doubled it then screwed it into the kitchen cabinets to block him from the carpet...just to keep him in the kitchen. He discovered the carpet quickly. Yesterday before I came in to greet him for the day, he moved his bed and scratched a sizable chunk of carpet out. Unless I'm w/ him he will do his mischief. I keep him busy to avoid issues like this...however, I sense during the night he is planning his next object to destroy. Factoring in all he's been through, to me he's been well mannered.

I'm having difficulty designing him a bed that he won't eat, or can't move.

Oh well...today will be better!

Well, this is something I did for her bed. I have 2 old pillows that I just covered with old pillowcases. Sewed the ends shut and had covered them with an old blanket. She loves it because it has our smell and she readily goes into her room when we leave or when she wants time alone.

LB did and still does her share of chewing, there is one spot in our bedroom where she chewed a spot, she doesn't chew as much but will go to that spot if we're not looking. I'll take a picture as soon as I can of the makeshift bed I made for her. It's not fancy or even pretty, but she likes it.

I have a play pen that I keep Sugar and Candy in when I am not home or not able to watch them. It is great because they can still sleep, eat, play and go to the bathroom in the pen.

As for the dog beds, I know what you are going through. Sugar and Candy went through 4 beds, not cheap ones either. Finally I stuck a big pillow dog bed in there and have the pen on top of it holding it in place. So far they haven't been able to move it or tear it up. They are in that brat stage, you know where they tear everything and causing all sorts of messes, they are my little monsters, lol!!

For harness, I would suggest getting a silk step in harness. It won't damage or break their hair like a regular harness will and it does go across the throat so you don't have to worry about your pup damaging his trachea.
