In yesterday's newspaper, 2 dogs ere electrocuted over the weekend in what is described as a "freak accident."
A Lab mix and a Scottish terrier were killed by a square manhole-like cover on an electrical box that was charged by a shorted wire.
The cover, called an access plate, would probably pose no threat to a human, but dogs not having any protection on their feet, were more susceptible to the power surge. There were no wires exposed.
The 9-year old Lab was brimming with current after stepping on the cover. The owner felt the shock in her fingers and then moved up to her hands. She actually felt it in her knees and it was a constant electric hum.

In today's paper:

The owner of the Lab are accusing officials of giving her "absolutely dangerous and callous" advice as her pet lay dying. She called 911 but was eventually transferred to a Park District rep.
The rep told her to drag the dog away from the electrified area.
The rep said 'Well, he's on a leash, isn't he? Just drag him by the leash.' The owner was afraid to move because she didn't know what was electrified.
The owners are contacting a lawyer.

The police said a Scottish terrier was also electrocuted but are now saying that the dog survived. It didn't state if both dogs were electrocuted at the same time or by the same cover.

My prayers go out to the owner of the Lab. You go out for a walk and a horrible thing happens.
I'm calling my village office and finding out if there are any type of wires under the man-hole covers in this town.
