As I am busy mulling names over and over in my head I wondered how you all came up with the names for your dogs.

Okay....

I'm a total Harry Potter geek :grinner: I wanted to name her after a character from the books. Well, after looking at different names and looking at LB, I liked the name Lily (Harry Potter's mother), it seemed to suit her. Well, I wanted to add a little pizzaz with that and tried different things. Belle had a nice ring to it, so I combined the two and got LilyBelle. Okay...you can laugh now :sidesplit:.

Oh, BTW, I got my Ipod inscribed with the motto "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" :D A total Harry Potter geek:tongue3: . Love the books!

For Kallie, we went to the internet to look for girls' names and selected a half dozen, narrowed it down to three and called our grandson and he chose Kallie. :smlove2: Now with Toby, his original name was Conway and neither of us liked that so we just kept tossing names back and forth on the way home from picking him up and "Toby" popped out of my mouth, hubby looked at me and then him and said, yep, he looks like a Toby. :smlove2: LOL

Jack's original name was Casper!!!!!!! When we were told by the shelter that we were approved for the adoption, my son had a name already picked out. The character 'Jack' is on the tv show 24. My son and his father love that show. Sometimes Tony wishes he hadn't named him Jack because he tries to terrorize us with his psycho modes. The tv Jack deals with government terrorists.

As the WHOLE Maltese world knows I am getting a sibling for Scrappy and yes very soon. :D

I posted this question for some ideas as we are unable to name our "pets" hooman names because of the nature of our business.

I so need to find a girl's name that just leaps off the page at me and I go YES!!! that's the name.

I Did have a name but as time passed and a few things happened I have gone right off it.

My hubby and daughter named Scrappy, so this time I get to choose the name. I must say though, that the name Scrappy has grown on me as he is far removed from what the name implies and it allows for lots of comments like "fancy giving such a beautiful dog a name like that" Where by I turn to hubby and say see!

Finding a non human name is just so difficult.

I think I have posted this before, so if I have bear with me...

Bucky's real name is Big Bucks - when I told hubby that I wanted a Maltese, he said it was going to cost him big bucks, and the name kinda' stuck....

Sadie's real name is Mercedes Benz. I have been trying to get Greg to buy me a new Mercedes, so when we got her, I was having a hard time thinking of a name for her - first she was Olivia, then she was Audrey. Anyway, he and my son put their heads together and decided she should be named Mercedes Benz and be called Sadie. Now he tells everyone he bought me a Mercedes with 4 on the floor.....

Well I had always like the name Bijou (French for jewel) but it simply didn't fit Perri. So, I just went and browsed tons of online naming places, and Perri just jumped out at me bc he just looked like a Perri!
So, I guess you could just look at pet name places, pick out a few you like, then once you get her, see what fits. Just out of sheer curiousity, what kind of business do you have that affects what you name your pets? Sorry I'm nosey LOL. Oh, and what happened to the name Scout?

Gosh Ashley you have a good memory ;)

I haven't mentioned the name Scout for months. I still like it as it is from our favorite book of all time "To Kill a Mockingbird" however since letting that name out I have found so many dogs with that name and all large breed dogs so have gone off it.

As for what business we are in well fairly obvious one that deals with people lol Scrappy is used in our work and so will his sister be.

It is supposed to lower your self esteem (in particular a child's) to hear a pet called by your name.

It is illegal in Brazil and a few other countries to give a "human" name to your pets. In Brazil it is a jailable offence.

Having said all that I so want to call a Shih Tzu (if I get one it will be a black one) Ebony which of course means black. I am working hard for that name.

PreciousPerri

LOL thanks--It's always the little things I remember though.
But now I'm even more confused, your business isn't obvious to me! And I can't believe that about Brazil--a law that governs what you name your pets!! Aren't you in Australia though? Sorry for all the questions LOL. Tell me to mind my own business if you want! :D

Kanga

Well it is true about Brazil. It is law.

I am just the messenger so don't shoot me. I am just explaining why I cannot give a human name to a pet of mine.

It is a proven fact that is does affect the esteem of children. More countries other than Brazil have the same law they just don't come to mind at the moment.

I cannot say more on an open forum what my family do as they are not only well known in their field in Australia, but internationally too. Most of it is philanthropic :D We have another business that supports that interest :)

Scrappy works with us and so as not to offend anyone it is best our dogs do not have human names. It is just an agreement we made when we got Scrappy.

I would hate to call out for example "George" and have not only my dog but a couple of kids responding to that name too.

I am not saying anyone else shouldn't call their dog whatever they want I was just explaining why I cannot not and therefore narrowing the choices for names.

Oh no Bren I wasn't calling you a liar LOL. Here, saying I can't believe that in that context isn't takin literally--it's just expressing surprise. I truly didn't know such a thing existed, and I find it bizarre.
I can understand why you wouldn't in your line of work however, if you work with children. That does make sense.
I'm sure you'll find a perfect name for your perfect girl. Does it look like you'll be getting one soon?

Well that is why we are on a forum. To learn from each other.

Scrappy will be getting his sister at the end of next month all going well.

Though, whether it will be a Maltese or Shih Tzu is still up in the air at the moment.

I don't watch Kath and Kim so have no idea where Ebony fits there :)
