A friend was offered co-ownership of a puppy by a breeder (not a Maltese). And he is quite excited by this offer!!
Anybody have any thoughts on the subject? I personally have no idea but as we have quite a few breeders here???

I do not know that I would like the idea of "owning a pup" with somebody else!! I like them to be "mine"!!

You hear a lot of co-ownership with breeders but I don't really know much about it.

How does it work?? Is it like having custody of a child??

I know like we coown Jake but only because AKC only lets one person own the dog so my husband owns him and I coown him.. Is that what you mean? Sorry Im so confused!! :tounge:

I think you need to be very careful when doing this. People sometimes get into arguments and things go so wrong. I don't think it would be for me, JMO:D

I personally would not be able to do it...........but know that several breeders co-own dogs when they are in the show ring. Does your friend have to invest $$$ or time or both?

I know that breeders will co own a puppy until it is championed and they get their puppy back. If this is the case I say that your friend should be OK. But if not I would want no part of it.

Well from the emotion you used you can just about bet this "deal" will turn sour. As we all know money grubbers get nasty when it comes to money. And this will turn nasty. I have no doubts about it!!

Well, I do not know because that is all I was told!

By the way, Becky, I want to thank you as you are the only breeder who has answered my query!

But the question remains:
What do anybody knows about co-ownership, none withstanding why I got curious about this!

A friend of mine put some money for a Wheaten show dog pup. My friend isn't a breeder and has no interest in it, but the lady she went into the deal with shows, breeds and is wanting to expand her breeding lines.
So my friend has the pup living with her FULLTIME and the other lady comes over and takes her maybe for a night or two and does training with her etc etc. Once she has been shown and has her championships she will then breed her twice and have her spayed and she will then live out her remaining years with my friend. My friend is more than happy with this arrangement. The dog (which is named Biscuit) will grow in my friends house with her other two dogs and her hubby and kids so when she has retired from show and breeding she will still be with her family.

I told her I personally couldn't do it, but she LOVES the breed can't afford $3000 for one and this way the breeder, biscuit and her win, so each to there own...

Bek 74,
Now that you mention this, I think I read about it a long time ago!

Do you have any update on that deal? How long ago did they start this? And how is it going?

It is only a new deal and so far it is working out great. I am pretty sure they have a contract which was signed and witnessed. My friend also has a receipt for her share of the dog.
I imagine it will be on going for the next 3-4yrs, since the dog can't be breed under 12mths plus it needs it championships and then maybe a litter once a year.
I like the fact the dog lives with my friend fulltime and the breeder just picks her up for some handling training etc, so that part is good. My friend is VERY happy with the deal.
