An animal advocacy group says its investigation has turned up coats - some with designer labels, some at higher-end retailers - with fur from man?s best friend.
The Humane Society of the United States said it purchased coats from reputable outlets, such as upscale Nordstrom, with designer labels - Andrew Marc and Tommy Hilfiger, for example - and found them trimmed with fur from domestic dogs, even though the fur was advertised as fake.
"It's an industrywide deception," said Kristin Leppert, head of the Humane Society's anti-fur campaign.
The investigation began after the society got a tip from a consumer who bought a coat with trim labeled as faux fur that felt real. Leppert and her team bought 25 coats and then had them tested to determine what species of animal the fur came from. Of the 25 coats tested, 24 were mislabeled or misadvertised.
Three coats - from Tommy Hilfiger?s Web site ShopTommy.com, Nordstrom.com and a coat from Andrew Marc?s MARC New York line, sold on Bluefly.com - contained fur from domesticated dogs. Most of the fur came from China.

I'm SO glad to see this posted here ....Everyone needs to know what they're buying and this country is importing the fur from animals that are skinned alive for their fur..
and not to jump in and take this thread over but Andrea - yes - they Kill Dogs & cats - no animals are just shaved and if they were this wouldn't be so disgusting. There are sites you can read more about this but they will make you cry.....searches like FUR is DEAD and CHINA FUR TRADE bring up tons of heartwrenching pictures and videos and I'll warn you - they're very VERY graphic and will make you sick

They just had this terrible story in the Suntimes newspaper today. It is disgusting what people will do for money.
The raccoon dog--a canine species native to Asia are not kept as pets, so they are used alot in the 'fake' fur business. They look like oversized, fluffy raccoons, and the activist groups argue that they are dogs. Importing their fur is not illegal. I think it all should be illegal.

I know - it's horrible....:( :( :( They do stun them but in many cases the poor animal is totally alive when they start cutting into them....There's videos on the net showing it and they are just disgusting....it happens every single day to thousands and thousands of these poor animals all so WE can wear their fur ???
whats worse is there are reports they go as far as stealing peoples pets so this is not limited to only the racoon dogs or fox....what they go thru is horrendous....just sickening.
I have a big mouth about stuff like this and did a ton of reading about it and don't advise anyone with a weak stomach to do a net search or watch the videos - I still have bad dreams over what I've seen ...it's haunting.

Villette, you are right about the videos. I have clicked on the links that have been posted on an Aussie forum I am on and it is just stomach churning.
I bought a jacket a couple of winters ago with a faux fur collar and hubby made me take the collar off and throw it out I am so glad he did ..... I feel ill still now thinking about that purchase..... I have not worn the jacket since.

I think I've seen part of that. I almost threw up :( :( the screams were horrific - I couldn't watch that one.
Just having these kinds of posts up helps in small ways - so many people just don't know this goes on.
