Hello all,
my name is adam. I just had my 22nd birthday on the 23rd and after much questioning about what i wanted for my birthday from the wife and family. I had decided that i would love to have a dog. So for the past couple weeks i have been torn on making a decision and a handful of dogs and im still running into mroe and mroe everyday that i still like. i guess my two main breeds that i would love having is a yorkie or maltese. How did you guys decide what to buy.

thank you =-)

Hee Hee, I bought both! I have a male Yorkie 16 mon. and a four yr old female Maltese and I love them both! I will admit there is a big difference in personality. So depends on which type of personality you like! But you can't go wrong with either breed! My yorkie is younger and smaller but he is a real sweety but a real player. Kallie is a lot more calm and low key but he can get her going pretty good! Tuff decision!!

When i was 17 my mom and my brother and i took care of 2 yorkies for two weeks while the owners were on vacation they we so cute and really rambunctious im really jsut looking for somehting that i can play with and take for short strolls/runs around the block and something that will cuddle up with me and my wife and the rest of the family while watching t.v. or something. but my heart is torn trying to decide. I never htought it would be this hard trying to get a fur baby. :)

Well, the yorkie is much more active than the maltese. But he is one cuddle bug.......always has to be on me or next to me. He's always at my side. I think the Maltese would be the same except that she is in full coat all the time and gets hot very easily when she lays next to you. So if she was in a shorter coat, she would be on top of me all the time too. She sits right underneath the chair when I am at the computer and the boy lays to my right side but right now he is on my lap. Both breeds to me are cuddle bugs. The Yorkie plays a lot rougher than than the maltese, which is a behavior we are working on. The maltese gets along with everybody and every dog. The Yorkie does not like other people or other dogs very much......we got him at six months and we were the third owners so don't know what could have happened to him in those first few months that may have made him that way. But Kallie we got at 2 yrs old and she has been just the dearest little critter around. My hubby thinks of her as his daughter with excessive hair. And if you asked Hubby which one to get........he'd say hands down, the maltese!!!! He loves Toby but Kallie the maltese can do not wrong! And she is super sweet! Great demeanor and oh so gentle when she plays!

Guess I'm really not making this any easier for you to decided, Sorry!!!

:D Hi and Welcome to MT!~~
I love Maltese's I also love the Yorkies. I guess whatever someone owns they will tell you all there is to know about the breed. Maltese's are people dogs they don't like to be alone..They are loving and usually love the famliy , but are really close to one person. Nemo loves my kids and husband , but I am his favorite:D .
Good Luck in your search

Again Welcome.

i guess from what it seems we should probably get a maltese. My wife and I have been emailing a lady in annadale Va who needs to give on of her 4 malteses up. Seems to be a good dog. I was reading at yorkie talk people with potty training problems with their yorkies im not sure if theres a big difference in the malteses compared to the yorkies.

and you guys are helping me decide believe it or not ^.^

HI and Welcome to MT:) I like both breeds although I have never had a Yorkie. Thats really cool that you found a breeder in Annadale, VA. I live about 5 minutes if that from Annadale, VA and I had no idea there was a breeder so close. Good Luck and I hope you get the pup you want:)

I've read alot too on the trouble of training a yorkie. BUT I have both and one was not any harder than the other. Both are 100% trained to go outside. Is the dog you are looking at an older dog or a pup???
Did you have them send you pictures. Not that I am suggesting that this is a scam.........but there are a lot of scammers out there. Is she a breeder or just someone that needs to reduce the size of her family? Boy or girl???

Nosey, aren't I?

oops... miunderstanding let me fix it

the lady has owned the maltese since it was a puppy it is now 4 yrs old and housebroken and what now so its a privately owned dog. we still arent heart set on him but just trying to figure out which one to get it's a hard process and my brain hurts lol. she has two kids and 4 malteses and seeing as how she cant get rid of a kid she is forced to give up a maltese for financial reasons.

I agree with your questions Carol. Yes did they send you pics and did someone reccomend this breeder? If you do not live in the area I volunteer to go and visit to see if its a reputable breeder if you are not sure:)
In terms of training each dog is different but with patience and consistency (words take from Carol:) )you can get your pup trained in no time.

What are you talking about, sure she can give up one of her kids! JUST KIDDING!!!!

My Kallie is four and still has a lot of spunk in her. One thing you might ask, is if he has any problems with luxating patella...........that can get expensivie to fix. Can't hurt to inquire. How big/small is the maltese???

And ladyjazz has a beautiful boy maltese and has offered to go and see this particular dog........I totally trust her judgement as to the dog. The character and quality and friendliness........Great Idea LadyJazz, you are a sweetie!!

Oh my gosh!! I completely understand! I had that happen to me too. My so called pup ended up in Cameroon by accident so they said...so yea I lost money too. I completely agree about the whole driving to see the pup. Also I like for people to reccomend breeders to me as well. Word of mouth works great:)

So I guess you are in the area of where the dog is??? Even better for you to go and see for yourself how the dog behaves............especially at four years old, you can tell alot about their personality and attitudes! I'd check it out if I were you!!!

Oh yes I would be glad to go and visit for you:) Some of the other questions you should ask this peson is about the temperament of the dog and if it has been aggressive at any point in time. I would also ask why she chose to give this one up in particular unless she is giving all of her pups up. You said she had 4 pups right? If you don't mind me asking how much is she charging you? If you dont' feel comfortable sharing this info on the forum if you want you are welcome to PM me:) I am just being curious.

all good questions im not sure about why that one im not sure about temperament (thats why we want to visit) and the price is whatever we feel we should pay because she doesnt want to charge us a certain amount for somehting she considers priceless if we do ge tthe dog she wants to visit us from time to time and take car eof it while my wife and i go on vacation. which is a good thing i think. but ill ask her tomorrow cuase if sent about 5 emails today. lol

Ok in terms of the visiting thing that would be great, however I do reccomend you getting a bill of sale as proof that you purchased the dog from her. Things can get a little mixed up with out it if something ever happens.

Welcome Adam:D

I'd want to know if the dog is fixed, any previous health problems, last health visit to vet, teeth condtion, wormed, vacinations up to date. It would also be good to speak to the dogs vet, she could say that everything is up to date but check with the dogs vet also!

If the dog is registered you want these documents too so you can transfer ownership!

Everyone here will help you as much as possible:D
