Well took our new addition to the vet today, and when they asked a name I told them Brian(hubby's idea) oh well. He didn't have mites, just so much dirt and wax in his ears that they are infected and the canals are nearly swollen shut. He really doesn't like the vet now! We got his ears cleaned out best we could and now have a antibiotic/steroid ear drop that I have to put in once a day for a week. Parvo and Rabies shots given, no ticks or fleas. Nearly a clean bill of health for my little Brian. Oh and he is about 1 1/2 years old judging by his teeth and weighs in at 10 lbs. I'm still waiting on my belly band to come in then I will start letting him in the house. I am half tempted to keep him outside till he gets his second parvo shot in 3 weeks(gonna have him nutered and du claws removed at the same time.)

Thanks for all the well wishes and help

I am so happy you got a clean bill of health and that Brian is with you.
I just have one question though: WHy remove his Du Claws this late?
Did the Vet tell you he will be in A LOT of pain if you do this:(
I see NO reason to do this , it should be done when they are young , very young.
I really wish you all the best for the future:hearter::hearter:

First congrats on Brian.........sounds like those ears were pretty bad and certainly needed the attention of a vet..........He will be a whole different dog once you get those ears cleared up. About the dew claws........ummm, there really is no need to remove them at his age. It is usually done within a few days of being forn when they are not firm and causes little pain at that time. You risk infection and a lot of pain at his age. I have four fluffs, all of which is normal to have had their dew claws removed at birth. Three maltese and a yorkie. Two of my maltese have their dew claws and as long as you keep them clipped like you would the other claws on the paw, they should never cause Brian any trouble. Believe me, mine do just fine with "having" their dews claws and hey, you would save a few bucks by "not" having them removed. Just my opinion but why do something that is not really necessary for the health of the dog. Please give it some thought before having it done.

Where'd ya get little Brian from???? Sounds like he has been a bit neglected.:( Glad you took him in and are helping to make him sound and healthy! Yay for you!

Glad you got Brian checked out and now his ears can start to heal. I agree with the others about the dew claw. Why add pain and spend the money.
Do you keep him outside? I would be afraid of attacks from wild animals or being stolen. They really are a social animal, they want to be by their owner.
You could go to PetsMart and get the diaper until you get the belly band. He needs and wants to be close to you.
Best of luck with your new little one.
I would love to put his birthdate on my calendar. If you don't know it, just pick a special date around the time he might have been born. Hope to hear from you soon.

Yea he based the name on family guy. Oh well. About the duclaws, not sure I'm gonna have them done or not. My only reason for this would be the fact that I had my arm sliced open by dewclaws on a dog once and I really don't like them. Also they tend to get forgotten when I have nails clipped. He is outside right now because I have my Yorkie inside, she was spayed and has never tied at all. Until I get a belly band for my little marker and humper I'll keep him outside. Brian was a stray that has been running around in my neighborhood for at least 2 months or more. He is really not sure how to act inside right now. I let him in in small spurts, until he starts to mark, thus the belly bands. They have been ordered and are being made as we speak. I live 2 hrs away from the nearest petco or petsmart and don't get to Oklahoma City very often.
I still have my number out there to contact me if they notice he is missing, and I really don't want to get to attached to him just yet. I have a large fenced in yard and live in town. Once I get my belly bands I'll bring him for longer periods of time and work on potty training. The only wild animals that I get to deal with are squirrels thank goodness.
