This question always come up on Maltese and Yorkie forums. People are always trying to decide which breed to choose and What are the pros and cons of each breed. My questions are...
#1. Do you own both breeds?
#2. If you own both..which one came first & why?
#3. If you own only one ...did you consider the other breed?
#4. What was the deciding factor in choosing the breeds you have?
#5. When people ask you about each breed...do you encourage or discourage them from getting one or the other?

I'll go first...
#1. I own one of each.
#2. I bought a malt first and then the yorkie almost 2 years later. I debated over which breed to go with and was finally talked out of the yorkie by someone whom had a horrible opinion of them. She had me spooked about the breed and I decide the malt would be a better choice.
#3.N/A
#4. I had always loved the cute factor of both breeds. Never really intended on getting 2 dogs. When I was at the crossroads of deciding which one to get I had gotten negative feedback on yorkies from several people so I went with the malt. Pretty much right away I still had the desire to have a yorkie and Bentley was having seperation anxiety when I went to work (poor baby got really depressed). I decide why not get one of each. I started my search and it ended up taking me almost a year to get a female from the breeders I was in contact with. Brought Mia home on Bentley's 2nd birthday..it was the best thing I could have done for him! (and me :D )
#5. It depends on whom is asking..if they have little kids, have an active lifestyle that keeps them away of don't seem ready to make the financial commitment..I advise them to not get either. I also caution them about the grooming needs of a malt.

#1. yes, one of each
#2. Maltese came first. My malt of 14 years passed away and it took me a while to get over her. Then I saw one in the park one day and practically broke down crying. I had to have another one.
#3.
#4. I just love maltese. My yorkie was a bit of a suprise. I never wanted a yorkie and thought maltese was the only breed for me. I was very apprehensive about owning a yorkie. But it has worked out fine. I was warned by quite a few people about them. Then I saw my cousin's yorkies (she has three that she breeds) and was able to spend some time with them. I got to see that each one had a very different personalityand they are a lot of fun.
#5. I usually don't meet people that I think would successfully own either one. LOL! I'm only kinda kidding on that one. If it was someone that I thought had the right attitude about dog ownership, I think the personality of the owner should match the personality of the breed.

#1. Yes, one of each
#2. My Maltese came first. I wanted a small dog that would do well in an apartment and I was smitten by the little white balls of fluff. At first I was thinking about a shih tzu or a bichon.. but the bichons were too big and some of the shih tzus I saw just looked weird. I did a lot of research and ultimately chose a Maltese. I didn't have time to change my mind on the breed since I found an ad in the newspaper and bought Tuffy that night. Unfortunately, despite all the research I did on the breed, I did not do the research on how to find a breeder so he's from a byb.
#3. I'll answer this one anyways, at the time before Pixie I didn't even consider Yorkies because my grandmother had one and he was huge. I was under the mistaken impression that they were big so never was interested in one. Now I'm about 99.99% sure that guy isn't a purebred.
#4. Size. I wanted a dog that didn't need a yard and could live comfortably in an apartment. Plus I just love how cute toy breeds are.
#5. I try not to play the breeds against each other and instead just tell them about my experiences with both breeds. The main thing I like to stress is to find a good breeder who breeds what you want in a dog; i.e. personality, coat texture, face structure, etc. The breed of dog is almost secondary to finding a good breeder imho.

LOL! I was thinking the same thing.. I don't think I've ever willingly told people who I got my dogs from because I really don't think they'd be good owners of toy dogs. :o

;) Thanks for saying that, I was feeling quite snobby for putting that in there. But I can't help it, it's true.

I second that opinion. I just cringe when I see threads (another forum I belong to) asking whether or not they should even consider a Maltese or Yorkie. If they have to ask then they probaby should not get one. They probably have not educated themselves as to the needs of these wonderful furbabies. I think it takes a special person to be a mommy to these little darlings.

1: Yes I do
2. Yorkie came first cause I had always wanted one and finally found one. After about a couple of months I decided that my Pup needed a playmate and I got her a Maltese.
3: N/a
4: I think Yorkie i got because i've always just loved the breed.. and I guess I got the Maltese after I saw a few friends who had them and after some researching on the breed decided to get one.
5. its a 50/50 split for me. There are so many traits that My Yorkie and My Maltese share, and some that they are complete opposites which makes me love them! it's a toughy :)
