View Full Version : Vinegar?

I read where someone said they put a little vinegar in the water to help prevent tear stains. I can't find the thread it was on but if it was you can you tell me how much vinegar to how much water?
I figure that if the Angel Eyes is too strong to use on them at this age then the vinegar won't be. Sylvia

Your puppies are very young and I honestly would not be giving them anything till they have finished teething. Then if the problem still exists I would check with the vet for any underlying problems then take it from there :)
I use only pure unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar in his daily water.
The APC changes the PH of the tears so that the bacteria that causes the discoloration on the face does not form on the tearstains.
In the meantime keep their faces dry. I dry Scrappy's face often throughout the course of the day and because of my daily regime his staining is very minimal I don't give the tears much of a chance to dry on his face.
My fluff has blocked tear ducts. so we will be putting up with this tearing problem until I gain courage to have him put under for what is really a cosmetic problem.

I agree with you Bren. I wouldn't give them anything either. Keep their faces clean and dry, give them good food and worry about it when they are around a year old.

Yep, making the extra effort to keep the face "clean" and "dry" is a big help in preventing and keeping the stains from their faces!:)

Sylvia,
I know it's frustrating when they tear, but your babies are way to young to start trying different things. Believe me when the teething is over I am sure their tears will be less noticeable, you have to give it some time. If after that they are still staining then all these methods are worth a try..

If they don't have something wrong with their tear ducts are they white without having to do anything? After they are done teething? Sylvia

It depends. See Nemo is from a pet store so I dont know his background, but he never stains never, he is all white. Some of my friends have Maltese's from the topknotch breeders and they stain some dont stain. I really dont know, I feel it could have to do with their genes, but I could be wrong.
Most likely after the teething stops your pups will be clear and only stain if something is wrong..

So there are some out there that never stain? Did Nemo stain while teething? Have you ever seen/heard of a line that doesn't stain? Sylvia

Once they have stopped teething then that aspect can be discounted and the Vet can look at the problem without it being masked by a teething problem...... that is why it is best to wait.
Ear infections or mites, a low grade fever can all be factors in tear stains. Or in my Scrappy's case blocked tear ducts but only a vet can answer these questions.
Keeping the area dry and clean does help stop the bacteria from settling and causing the discoloration.
It is not the tear stains themselves that are discolored it is the oxidization that occurs when the face is damp from the tears that causes the discoloring

Nemo only stained when he was on Nutro (The food) he will stain for some reason if I give him lamb or chicken. I dont know of any lines that stain or dont stain. Like I said breeders have many champions, so all are different. Most reputable breeders lines I am sure dont stain, but they are always some that will.~others bad others not so bad some none.:D

This is correct I have a breeder who has never had tearing in her Malts and I found another who said some of her's do and so don't
I equate it to a lottery.....
I just wish I had the courage to get Scrappy's tear ducts done in fact I wish the problem had surfaced when he was being neutered then he could have had both ends done at the same time.:fainted:

Do you use anything over the counter for ear mites? Ben scratches and crys. I've been using otc creams because I can't see anything in his ears. He doesn't do it all the time so I haven't made a vet appt for him yet. Sylvia

We have never had ear mite problems I was just listing it as one of the known possible factors for tear stains.:)
Scrappy was 5 months old when he was neutered.:)

Google both the Angel's Glow and the Angel Eye's. The Angel Glow has more stuff in it. The Angel Eyes only has 2 ingredients. You might not want all that extra stuff that's in Angel Glow. Sylvia

I use Angels Eyes only on Macy and Jazzy and it works great. I did the research on AE and Angels Glow and Angel's Eyes proved to me to be the right one to use.
