In today's news a woman got a $9,500 settlement from a garabe truck company that ran over her pet.
The woman had a little Schipperke (7 yrs. old) that was out for a walk and saw the gruesome death right in front of her eyes!!!
The unusual settlement came 4 years after the death of her pet.
The settlement is important because it provides legal precedent in the state of Illinois. Courts here traditionally ruled that dogs are personal property and that their owners aren't entitled to payment for emotional suffering when their animal is killed.
Her lawyer is very pleased with the settlement and said the courts need to recognize that dogs are important family members and that the grief experienced by the death of a pet is genuine.

Good for her !

While the settlement was a good thing it doesn't return the dog :(

However the judgement is excellent news.

Dogs are family members and should be considered as such by law.

I was listen to the car radio one day when they discussed that it is a proven fact that psychologically a woman bonds closer to the family dog than any other member of the family does. because she is usually the one who spends the most hours at home with the family dog and therefore she mourns the loss of the dog as much as she would mourn the loss of her spouse..... I found that fact interesting.

Sad to know that she will for ever have the vision in her head of the way her baby died in front of her!!!! Money cannot remove that from her mind and heart but at least their was some justice inflicted on the garbage truck owner/driver.
