So I've been working on training my dog to go mostly indoors right now. We use peepads in the bathroom, and after every meal and after being crated, I take him to the bathroom where he usually pees and poos, if he needs to. He's improving mostly, although sometimse there's an accident here and there.

So anyway, I've been doing a lot of research on dogs and training and such, since it's my first dog and all, and lots of people are very against potty training indoors, because it teaches them to "eliminate inside the house" and it'll be harder to train them go outside when it's easily to do so later (like when I have a yard). What is everyone's opinions about this? How many of your dogs are trained to go indoors vs outdoors? If you dog can do both, what is their primary potty spot?

I live in an apartment right now and to me, letting the dog just pee there in the apartment's grounds is a bit weird since it's not my grounds technically. Also, what if it's raining, snowing, or cold?

Sassy is potty box trained and doesn't even know she can potty outside. Her box defines her potty area and we have never had a problem with her eliminating in other areas of the house.

All four of mine are outside trained and go regardless of the weather but I only have the rain as a weather issue since we live in Florida.

My chi grandfurbaby is pee pad trained so when we watch her, we put a pad down and she is very good about going there. When I take mine out, she will always go with them and if she has to go, she will also potty outside. When she does her poo, my kids look like they know someone is going to get in trouble because they know there is no pooing allowed in the house so I try to pick it up as quickly as possible. :D

Nemo goes on the pad. I am to lazy to walk him in the winter and rain :D
However he will pee when he is outside

Both of mine potty primarily outside, but we live in Southern California so that they only have the rain to contend with. We have doggy doors that give them free access to our backyard. We also keep pee pee pads down in their room and they occasionally use them during the night if they are too lazy to go outside.

Both my girls go outside (they are bell trained, so they ring the bell when they need to go out, but we take them out on a regular basis regardless). I live in Canada where there is snow, below freezing temps, rain...you know, bad weather in general different times of the year. My girls still go outside (even in the snow) but they are bundled if the temperature warrants...it sure makes them pee fast and come back inside.

I don't like the idea of dogs peeing inside, kinda gross especially if you have guests, so mine are outside potty trained. The are bell trained like Elizabeths so its easy to know when they need to go. We travel alot and go to other peoples houses so it would be ackward to lay down a pad at someone elses house or when were traveling.

I think it also depends on the dog. If they are a primarirly indoor dog and don't go many places I guess it would be ok to pee inside. But we take our dogs everywhere and we walk alot and play outside so they are trained to go outdoors.

I have a pup head portable dunny for Beanie as he can't walk down the stairs (tiny chihuahua) and with 3 skin kids and a busy life I just can't keep taking him down all the time. Max and Cassy-Ann are both outside trained. If beanie is downstairs he will potty on the grass. His indoor toilet is like real grass.

When training Beanie I used a pen and in it was his toilet, bed, water and toys, and once he got the hang of using his potty area, I made the pen bigger. Now he has half of upstairs I just gate the hallway off still so the area isn't too big. Beanie is wonderful, he will only potty in his area.

I love the pup head portable toilets, you just wash out the fake grass and put it back on ( I have two patches of grass so I rotate), there is no waste and it is better for the enviroment.

Both of mine are indoor trained. I have medical reasons for wanting to do that. However Gracie will potty outside as well. They both go their designated areas which are usually a puppy pad inside a big doggie litter box. Lulu ALWAYS goes where she is supposed to. On occasion, G doesn't. When she is mad, she pees in front of the cats litter box which is on linoleum. LOL. Also LuLu HATES the grass and really doesn't even like being outside that much and she puppy pad trained when I brought her home so it all worked out.

A lot of people that live in big cities have to indoor train their dogs. Could you imagine trying to get a dog out of a 30 story floor apt. to potty ever so often?

I think indoor potty training is fine.

Jack is also potty trained to go outside. He rings the bell to let us know because he refuses to bark to let us know!!! As with his sis' up in Canada, Jack loves the rain, snow, cold weather....he has no problem going out and potty.

I guess it just matters on the dog, your life style and what suits your needs best. I've never thought of inside potty training. Jack wears a belly band when we go somewhere else, esp. if they have dogs, because he likes to 'mark' his new territory.

What do you all mean by bell training? You have a little bell by the door?

A bell is hung from the door (or near) and the dog is trained to ring the bell when he/she wants to go outside

We started the bell training when we got Oscar it took him a while to catch on, but he did, and then we got Keysha and we are currently bell training her as well, but things are not going so well, she did ring the bell once and went out and pottied but she is still young and she need more work at it. Oscar now also goes to the back door and scratched it if he wants out. We bought our bell hanger it is a dog with bells hanging on its feet. we found it at a local pet store I am sure most have them.

My girls are both indoor potty trained. I did that mostly for health issues on my part that sometimes keeps me in bed AND I am don't want to take the kids out in the rain, cold, etc. LOL.

I have desinated areas in the house for their Potty box (giant dog litter box lined with puppy pads) and then a few areas that just have a pad down.

LuLu was already trained the day I brought her home when she was a tiny pup and always always goes to her designated place. Gracie still has an accident or too....but mostly she does it on purpose I think. She will sometimes pee in front of my stove or in front of the litter box....both of which are on linoleum, so easy clean up!

Gracie also potties outside as well. That just started in the last year so I am glad for that. LuLu hates grass so I am sure she will never potty outside...LOL

I don't think there is anything wrong with indoor potty training. I am sure the pet owners that live in NYC in those skyscraper apt. buildings all have indoor trained dogs.

Mine are trained to go both outside and inside. I have a doggie door, but use washable potty pads when the weather is bad. I make my own washable potty pads from reclaimed underpads for incontinence. Works really well for us.

we haven't had a bad winter in a few years . (watch this one will be!) Benny is trained outside, he sits by the door now! the trainer said to get an xpen and wee pads for bad weather, so I am not sure how to do both won't that be confusing:confused:? I can see the reasons for both.
