We are thinking about getting a maltese puppy. We have yorkies. What are the differences in maltese and yorkies? Do they get along well together?

This is all in my experience...
Maltese are much more low-key than Yorkies. I've heard that the two breeds are very complimentary to each other for the most part. My ex boyfriend has two Maltese littermates and they are not very nice to other dogs, so they don't like Stewie. Maltese seem to be more difficult to groom since they are white. Some Maltese have a difficulty with tear stains.

We had a six month old Yorkie when we got Sampson. Sampson was three months old. They are the best of friends. They keep each other company, fight sometimes, but mostly play. Gracie is very protective of Sampson. Two is much better than one and the two breeds seem to be a very good match.

My malt isn't very playful & he's calm and laid back until ....the doorbell rings and it's FREAK OUT time....BARK! BARK!! ARF! ARF!! BARK!! BARK!!! BARK! ARF!! ARF!!!!!!! He's very yappy, earpiercing and loud. So maybe he isn't calm or at least he isn't when the doorbell rings. He's my little shadow..does not take his eyes off me and he's a one person dog. My yorkie is very playful, not hyper, barks very little and freindly to everyone. Each dog is going to be as different as you and I. Each & Everyone has their own temperament and personality. I don't think Bentley is typical of the maltese breed..they are known for their gentle and sweet nature and though he is that way for me I would not consider him a friendly dog to others..hes a little aloof and reserved.

I think the main differences I see is Tinkerbell is more fiesty and really motivated to do things like learn tricks and she loves everbody she meets. Chloe is very laid back, will let me do any grooming I need to with no protests, she's very silly and playful, but she is cautious with strangers. And as Luvmypupster said, maltese can make their bark go so highpitched. Chloe is very verbal when she plays with Tinkerbell and it can cause a headache. She knows the word quiet and will stop when I tell her, but it is deafening if I let her go on.
For some reason when my husband sleeps on the couch, Chloe will bark and bark at him, she thinks his snoring is his way of playing with her for some reason. She will go right up on his chest and bark right in his face, it is the only thing that will tick my husband off to no end (and yes I see her doing it and do not stop her! :D LOL!)

Jodi, I don't get it..how can these little malts have such earpiercing barks? Mia's (yorkie) is no where near the high pitched.

Luvmypupster: Does Bentley ever squeak? Every now and then I put Chloe in her crate, she doesn't cry but occasionally I will hear this high squeak. It's funny.

lol your funny :)
We have one of each chelsey is my second Maltese. My first one was Missie.
Anyway as the person mentioned before it really depend on the personality.
our Yorkie is hyper he has to be near some one all the times. He really bounces all over and will not sit still unless their is something wrong with him. He is great with children and love long walks. Gee these sounds like a personal add :)
Anyway Chester is the sweetest dog but he will also drive you crazy with his barking. He has a high pitch bark and will stop him once he gets going. He is very protective of our home and us but he does not bite. For some reason she can tell if a stranger is not a nice person it does not happen often but he can tell right away. He will not charge anyone but he will stand up firm like ( I don't like you so don't come any further) . Chester alarms us if someone enters the yard and he even told us when a piece of our home came off in a storm . We never heard it but he did... and even ran up the stairs to show us. The builder had to come out the week later to replace it. He takes care of Chelsey , I mean he will not go anywhere without her. They get along great and hate to be separated. Chelsey is the sweetest puppy; she is so smart and sweet. She gets in all kinds of trouble if you let her out in the yard, she love to investigate. She also love going walking and being carried in a bag.. Chester hates that and just won’t have it. She was very easy to train to go to bathroom. Chester was to but that was because the breeder did that part for us. Alone Chelsey is very laid back and will just sit near your feet. She is the perfect companion. When they are together.. They can play all night tough of war with a little toy they have they just run back and forth taking it away from each other. Chelsey does not bark only when the door bell rings and her bark is scary... it really scars me... it is do deep and load... I can't get over it comes from such a cutie. Anyway i don’t think you can go wrong with a Maltese. Just ask your breeder lot of questions and ask them to help you pick out your puppy.. tell them about your yorkies personality so they can help you pick the best one to fit the personality. . That what we did. They did not get along the fist night we brought Chelsey home, nothing crazy . By the day two they were best of friends.
Here is a picture of them together that first week

He doesn't squeak but my son swore up and down that Bentley meowed the other day...LOL. Bentley is very vocal, he barks, he snores, he moans and groans and he talks. One day I was baby sitting one of my granddaughters and Bentley started .."talking". My little granddaughter said.."Nonna, whats Bentley saying?" and the freaky thing was..I could tell her what he was saying. Now that's pretty bad...I speak maltese!!!! I can pretty much translate whatever he says...LOL!!! Is that not pathetic? LOL
