Vincent is a grass eater. Yesterday my yard was mowed, left clumps of grass. The little stinker was rutting like a pig out there! Picking up clumps, tossing them, chasing the clumps, then eating as fast as he could!
I was trying to catch him, he thought it was a great game. Running and running.. 'catch me if you can!'.
By the time I finally caught him, his muzzle was all dirty from the rutting in the ground, grass hanging everywhere.. what a mess he was!!
I was sure he would get sick, but was fine. Why would he do this? Anyone else have a grass eater? Before it was freshly mowed, daily he would go to his favorite areas and chew on the grass blades.
I have never had a dog that loved to eat grass like this one!! I try my best to keep him from eating it. Persistant little devil. This morning I took him out on a long lead so I could better control him, but he snuck in a few bites anyway. I really don't want him to do this. It worries me. Especially with a lawn service. I don't treat my lawn, but I am sure some of the other clients they have do and I am afraid some of those clumps could be from a build-up on the mower from other lawns that have been treated.
Any suggestions?

Not only that but the fuel fumes that coat the grass aren't healthy, thats why you can give horses lawn clippings to eat. I would suggest your lawn service guy to use a proper grass catcher on the back of his mower or empty it more often so it isn't spilling out and leaving big clumps of grass.
I mow my own lawn and I use a catcher and empty it often and NEVER have clumps of lawn clippings all over my yard. One it isn't healthy for your pup to be eating and second they roll in it and make a huge mess, it almosts stains their hair green. As to him just laying out in the sun eating and pulling out grass, mine sometimes do that and I don't believe it is a big problem, eating toxic lawn clipping is though.
Please speak to that lawn service and let them know it isn't exceptable for them to be leaving clumps of grass around your lawn.

Nope no grass eaters here! I have heard that it will make them throw up if they eat grass.............and Vincent doesn't throw up????
I would try to keep the clumps of grass picked up so he can't chomp down on them. He sounds like a stinker but a sweet stinker!! :hearter::hearter:

Finally another grass eater, I have 2 and they don't only eat the grass they are digging little holes in the yard, where they pull out the grass by the roots and leave little bare spots. So far they have not gotten sick and are doing fine, they are 8 months and 4 months so I am hoping that they will grow out of it, that it is a puppy thing.

I hope Vincent grows out of it also, but he is 1 1/2 yrs. so.... I don't know about that! Seems like a nasty habit I am doing my best to break.
I am going to call my lawn service and ask that the clippings be bagged. But I know that won't stop the rutting and eating the rest of it! I am going to have to be the Keeper of the Lawn, and show him that is not a good thing to get into. Wish me luck on this stubborn guy!

Ugh!! I feel your pain :tounge: Both of mine eat grass occasionally.. I'm not sure why. I always heard that they would eat grass when their tummies were upset and needed either a "grass block" :tounge: or help with digesting something. Now I'm convinced its just a nasty habit. I scold them when I see them doing it but that doesn't stop them from doing it when were away. My big dog is especially bad about this  He's so bad :o
I wish I had some tips for you but I myself am at a loss

We call Abbie "the goat"..she loves to munch on grass...any grass, so I watch her like a hawk when we are walking (I don't want her eating grass that may have chemicals, dog pee, what have you).
No, she doesn't throw up from it. She just likes to chew on it..like a goat, or a mini-albino cow. We are just saying "No" when we catch her in the act and hope this will phase itself out (like the poop eating did:eek:)

Chip is a grass eater. He actually will do tricks for a blade of grass out of an entire field like it's a special treat. He's literally been across the yard and if he sees me pick one blade of grass, he comes sprinting over to me then jumps up and down at my leg. Goofy dog!

Daisy is now 7 mo. old and she still eats anything she can get her mouth on. She eats grass, tomatoes, peppers, green beans from the garden. I have to chase her around or offer her a treat and get her to come to take things away. I will post a picture of her after she has been "gardening" LOL. I also hope she will grow out of it as she gets older. I said in a past post that she got a hold of a paint ball, someone shot into the yard. She was florecent green for awhile on her beard LOL. 18516 after the gardening:lol2:
18517 before

Oh Dasiy, you are as dirty as Oscar gets when he digs in the flower gardens. Caught him pulling branches off of one of my tree shrubs that is behind a small fenced in flower garden. I wonder what makes they want to do things like that.

Good to hear that there are others that eat grass as well. Minnie loves to play on grass and as soon as she hits the grass her personality changes. Goes wild. As soon as he hits the grass area, she starts chewing and eating. Most times she will throw it all up.
I try to stop her, but it's her favorite pastime....
Here are some pics of her on the grass and just after a bath.

ok we are in the grass eater stage and anything else that happens to be around. I have to watch this guy carefully. I have to make my son cut the grass really short and bag it. Does this go on forever? or just when they are puppies?

Molly loves to eat grass. When she was younger (she's 5 months now) I would let her out to the front lawn to potty. She would wander around the grass, sniff and eat! In the beginning I would just pick her up to go back into the house but after awhile she would just run away and make me chase her haha! So I tried to lure her in with treats...that worked for a while but she got smart and ignored me. Now I keep her on a leash when I take her outside to potty. I also had to leash her up because she started barking at anyone outside the house. One time tried to run up on a lady walking her 2 very large dogs! Anyway, since then Molly hasn't eaten the grass.
