View Full Version : Groomer Nightmare...

Babe was taken by my parents yesterday a.m. to have his nails trimmed because I couldn't do them.

He returned w/ his nails still rough--not hand filed after trimming; and the topper is they shaved the hair under his eyes/nose off--I was training the hair to blend in w/ his facial hair. Giiving him distilled water stopped the tearing.

Can anyone guesstimate how long it will take for the hair to grow back?

I'm P..... to say the least. The puppy is mad at me. And they cut bangs--this was being trained to go into a topknot.

Before I would have taken him to any groomer, I was going to check out the environment for cleanliness. And interview the groomer.

I'm so upset.

You folks had advised to leave the hair alone on his face; and I listened--he's not a poodle. And the risk of shaving near his tear ducts. He goes for nail trimming only and returns like this.

:( I am sorry! This has happened to all of us. I would say it takes about 2 months to start looking a little normal again:( I can't tell you how many times I have been through this, don't worry it does grow fast.

awww dont worry, it will grow back! it's just unfortunate as the head & face hair takes it's time growing but it will get there.

Well the nice thing about hair is that it will grow back! Know it has upset you but nothing can be done now so just deal with the now and let go of what has happened. Mine are both in long coats and I would never take them to a groomer unless I was going to do a massive haircut change to them. I don't trust beauticians or groomers! Always had bad experiences!

But stay cool, don't get upset with your parents, at least they are now getting involved somewhat in Babe's care..........I think that should be taken as a good sign!:D

sorry for your experience with the groomer. Last time I took my maltchi to the groomer he came back terrified. We could not touch him unless he screamed. He was scared of everything. We ended up at the emergency vet until 1 AM, All the found was that his pad had been cut and had bunches of stuff caked on it to stop bleeding. They said he may have strained muscles. He is going to another groomer tomorrow and I hope it goes better. He is in pretty bad shape because he was terrified to let me brush him for a long time.

I didn't take him...it's somewhere on Jackson Dr.--not near you in La Jolla. I was contacting groomers in town. I needed to interview a few and see the premises. But his nails needed trimming. My Mom requested his bangs be cut. I was training his hair for a topknot. I'm very upset that they cut away the hair on the inner corners of his eyes--they may have nicked one eye. This hair was to be left alone to grow. I stopped his tearing w/ Distilled Water from his teething.

One person I contacted on Greyling Dr.--"A Pets Best Friend" was very prompt in e-mailing me back. Also, knew from his e-mail how a Maltese should look. I just hadn't gotten up there to view the premises and speak to him yet. Babe gets car sick--so I needed to prepare him for a car ride.

I've also been busy w/ Babe. I'm new to all this.

I would suggest contacting the above...prices were fair. I will go next week if I can--the damage has been done. They were also willing to show owners techniques on grooming. You had the option of grooming your pet w/ their equipment or having them do it.

I would only have Babe groomed at any groomer if I could stay w/ him the entire time.

I know you only want the best for Mia.

Question--You used the Barker Breaker w/ Mia--how did it work?

Thanks

I just took Chipper back to a new groomer today and she did a great job. She said he was nervous when they did his legs and feet but I think he will get used to them. He looks adorable.

I did use the Barker Breaker with Mia and I have to say I LOVE IT! She never barks and if she does all I have to do is show the thing to her and she stops! It is amazing! I am really sorry to hear about your experience with the groomer! At least it will grow back, right? I know it is easy for someone else to say, but it will! I am sure Babe still looks cute!

hello,

im sorry for your experiences but can I input my opinion looking in from the other side.

I can understand the nails being rough afterward if a nail grind was not requested. We offer this service as an add on service for a few dollars extra. It cost more because alot of dogs do not tolerate the noisy vibrating grinder. Also, some dogs have long hair that have to be carefully pulled back bc the grinder can become tangled in the hair. This is really hard with wiggly dogs that have long hair and do not like the nail grind...bad combo. This process takes longer than a normal nail cut so it is extra.

Also, I dont feel the groomer should be blamed for every wrong move like in this situation you indicated your parents (?) requested the hair around his eyes be trimmed. The groomer was only following instructions. As far as nicking his eye...shame on them. But otherwise they groomed him as instructed.

The GOOD thing is the hair grows back!

I understand not wanting the hair around the eyes being trimmed. I WORK in a grooming salon and when I first got Skwooshee I feared that I would trim his eyes by habit! It was odd bc I KNEW i wasnt going to but feared that I might...haha! Wierd! At least I know I would not make that mistake on a customer's dog because I understand why many people want the hair around the eyes left longer.

anyhow just my opinion! thank you.

I agree there are some great groomers out there, but my experience has been horrible with most! I tell them time and time again not to touch the face , about 5 times to be exact and everytime they shave it like a poodle look:( I can't tell you how many times this has happen to me! I don't take Nemo anymore its ALWAYS the same result. Last time he went I stood right there and didn't leave till she was done I had to make sure she wouldn't touch his face! I have given up I just can't find a good one and I am sick of getting upset when they shave his face:( then I have to wait months for it to look decent again!! Its horrible:o I really wish I was able to find a good one, but no such luck yet!

I guess since I am a groomer I dont understand how anything like that could happen.

As a groomer, I avoid shaving as much as possible unless they are absolutely sure they want it. Especially the face as most dogs are intolerant of clippers on the face. I seriously do not see how anyone can make such a mistake! I mean this is what they get paid for!

The ONLY way I will shave the face is if it is matted AND I have the pet parent's approval and signature. We also require a signature on a matted release form. But I guess people make mistakes. If you dont groom your dog yourself then I guess it is a matter of finding the right groomer for your dog.
Thanks for reading! Good luck to those searching for the right groomer!

I really really love what I do. It is not a job to me! Because of this I take pride in what I do...I like seeing people happy. I love when people request me to groom their dogs...it feels good and most dogs are great or at least tolerable for the groom so it the customer I am trying to please! So I guess thats why I dont understand alot of the mistake I hear about!

Anyhow..thanks again. This forum is great, very nice people!

Yeah, could you come to CA for grooming?

I know excellent groomers exist, and I don't now blame the groomer for what they did. My parents do not know what should be done. Babe gets car sick. I have not had time to get him used to car rides yet.

This is a puppy (almost now an adult) that has been w/ us since Jan. I don't know what he experienced prior to coming to us.

I am grooming him daily at home. He is getting better w/ the tolerance. Re: touching his feet/nails he will not yet allow me to do this. He will now allow me to groom his legs and that is an accomplishment.

I must do a lot of his grooming prior to him going to sleep. I don't like to do this then because he should be able to rest/sleep w/o disturbing him.

But he does wiggle or walk away when trying to groom him...he doesn't like to be placed on a table yet.

I keep trying w/ him. And he is trying to be good. He's a handful at times.

But I think all of us could use a person like you that likes to please the customer and the dog.

Perhaps all of us could meet you at a central location and bring all our puppies/dogs for a grooming? Just kidding.

Thanks

Linda
