View Full Version : Toby has HGE AGAIN!!!

Poor little Toby, if you remember had HGE the first week in July but had it really bad and I was totally unaware of what he had until it was almost too late to save his life.:(:( But an overnight stay in the Emergency Hospital, excellent work by the vet and her staff and he recovered.

Well, this morning, he refused breakfast (first sign of an issue especially with him) and just wandered around aimlessly as though he was unsettled. Took the girls out to potty and he stayed in the house looking out the door which I left open for him.............brought the girls back in and found bloody stools and clots all over the house. I knew immediately that he had the HGE AGAIN!!! I also found a little throw up under the couch. So I called the vet and they said to bring him in two hours so I spent the two hours cleaning up Toby, the carpet and getting myself ready. Went and they gave him a shot for the diahrea and a dose of antibiotics and then some meds to take home with me for four days. Said he should be feeling better by late afternoon and to give them a call as to how he is doing. We came home and he drank tons of water and now is just laying around so pathetic looking. He just does not "look" like he feels well. No food until this evening and then just chicken and rice if he will take it and then call them in the morning.

This HGE onset happens sooooooooo suddenly without warning. But I am at least aware of what it is and what needs to be done...........immediate help from a vet!!!! No putting this off and hope that they get better because they don't get better on their own..........the risk of death is high if left untreated.

So spending my day watching and holding my Toby.....my poor little Toby! :(:(:(

Thanks, I am sure that I have caught it early this time and he will be fine in a few days and be back to terrorizing the girls! :D

I was horrified when I saw the blood but knew right away what it was and off to the vet we went. I am fine now that he has not had anymore episodes and has meds. :) I may just call you tonight, just to hear your New Yorker accent to cheer me up. :D :D :D :D

Your kiss was given........and yes, Lisa, it looked just like a scene from CSI again! UGH! Thanks for your concerns and he is resting but not eating, just drinking and peeing. Hopefully he will get a little chicken and rice into him tonight.

It is not a pleasant thing to deal with for him or me but knowing the signs and catching it early, getting the right treatment is crucial. I learned the hard way with the first time he had it. Here is a link to the MT Library where the HGE is discussed in detail.

Wow. I had never heard of this.
Poor little guy... thank God you knew the signs and caught it right away!!

Is it common that once they have had it, to get it again?

Prayers and [HUGS] sent your way.

Oh Carol, I am so sorry poor little Toby is going through this again and you and bob. I pray he is feeling better really soon. Do the vets think that he will suffer from this condition long term? I read that once a dog has had it that it can usually get it again, and it hasn't been that long since his last attack.
I sure pray that handsome Toby doesn't keep suffering with this horrible condition long term.

Yes, once they get it, there can be reoccurances of it and I knew that but just didn't expect it to happen so soon.:(:(

The vets do not know enough about this condition to able to predict if and how many times it may reoccur because they don't know the initial cause of it but has something to do with bacteria in the intestines. I just hope that we don't have to go through this every couple of months. It is so physically draining on him when he gets it.

Does anyone thing that probiotics might help???:confused:

Oh and Toby ate all his dinner last night but did not poo...........been drinking a lot of water which is good to keep him hydrated. This morning, he had all his breakfast and got his ball to play so he is certainly feeling better today. This time was not as bad as last time because I took him asap to the vet from the first sign. Last time I was in the dark as to him even having it and so he went three days from the onset of the first symptom until he was treated at the emergency hospital. Thank goodness they knew what he had and how to fix it.
