I almost at the end of my rope over this HGE stuff with Toby. Woke up this morning and he went right outside and did his business and it looked perfectly normal. Came inside, fixed them their breakfast and then made the hubby's lunch. Went outside to tell the hubby bye and bring in the trash bins and when I came back inside the house............clotty blood was all over the place! My heart sank. I immediately rang up the vet, got him right in but my regular vet was not there. I told them exactly what he had and they checked him and decided he was not "that" bad and gave him meds and some Science Diet ID to eat. Well, I asked about a shot for the runs and an antibiotic and said he didn't need it.:mad: I was so upset and reminded them of his episode in July and then another episode just two weeks ago. I left without the shot and came home. He drank a little water but would not eat the SD..........so I made him some chicken/rice and he refused it as well. I did use some of the chicken to get his meds into him and he laid down and was resting. The next thing I know he is missing. So I went looking and there were "SIX" areas of vomit............lots of vomit. So I called the vet and they said to just not give him anymore food or meds on an empty stomach...........I told them he had food from breakfast. They said give him another dose in the morning an hour after breakfast as this dose must have upset his stomach. I was NOT a happy camper to say the least.

Then I thought to myself, well if he threw up the meds, then he has in reality gone untreated because he didn't get ashot   ........
so it was as if I had not taken him to the vet in the first place. Within two minutes of getting off the phone with the vet, he threw up three more times. I called back and they said bring him in..................they gave him "two" shots this time which was what I had asked about before leaving last time. I then proceeded to explain that this is an aggressive bacteria and needs to be treated asap to keep symptoms from getting worse and allowing it to overtake him and cause him to be IVed or his death. (I have been down that road the first time with him having had it so bad).

The good news is that he has not had any more bloody stools and has not thrown up anymore. He won't eat and he is drinking but only a little bit. If he is not better in the morning, then off to the hospital we'll go AGAIN!!!

I am going to change vets and also write my regular vet a message that he needs to get a competant person to fill in for him because this guy was way off base and would not treat Toby aggressively.:mad:

Ok so there ya have it and I feel better.

Wow! What a nightmare. That poor baby. I feel so bad for him and you both. That sweet thing doesn't deserve this. I am glad you are writing your vet a note. Vets and docs need to pay more attention to what WE say about our babies. We aren't stupid and we know what is going on.

Wishing Toby for a very speedy and complete recovery.

Oh no Carol, not again!! I'm so sorry that Toby and you are going thru this. I would definitely get at least another opinion on this and yes please let your regular vet know how you and Toby were treated. It's happening too often. I sure hope Toby is feeling better now. So sorry.

OMGosh, poor toby, I can't believe he is still going through this :(, this is just terrible.
I would also have been very upset at that vet and good on you for writing in a letter. Not sure why you would change vets though as you seemed quite happy with your regular vet and it was juts the fill in that stuffed up.

With that aside, I pray Toby is better really soon and this gets under control asap. This must be so hard to have to keep dealing with every few weeks or so.

I just want to thank all my MT "Family" for the well wishes, positive thoughts, suggestions and kind prayers for me and Toby. He is doing a bit better tonight and was able to eat a little organic yogurt..........I felt he needed something in his tummy so he doesn't go hypoglocemic (SP) on me during the night. He is still not himself but at least he has stopped the bloody stools and has not vomited since this morning!

I'll update Toby's condition in the morning! Night all!

Well, we made it through the night without an incident; slept right by my side all night.........I think from pure exhaustion. This morning, he went out and did pee and came back in and went right to the kitchen but would not eat his reward treat (Kallie helped him out by eating his:mad:). Then I fixed the girls' their breakfast of the regular kibble except reduced the amount of Evo Red Meat and put in a few kibbles of the NB Duck/Potato w/ a teaspoon of canned Evo Beef. Toby got a litte of the Wellness, NO Evo Red Meat, a 1/2 teaspoon of the canned Evo Beef and then some of my chicken/rice/SD ID. Just a small portion mind you but he ate every bit of it. My mixture of chicken/rice also had some probiotics in it as well. Let's hope he keeps it down. I'll be giving him his meds at 7:30AM. He is resting in his bed next to the pc but not sleeping. I hope that his poor little tummy is able to hold down the food and his poop is "NORMAL" this morning. :)

Isn't this his 3rd episode with HGE? Seems like he just got over it not too long ago. I sure hope he is doing better and they can get him fixed. Will it keep coming back as quickly as it has?

YEP............THREE!!!! The first was around July 4th, second time was Sept 15th and then yesterday, October 2nd..............I just don't know what to do with the poor guy. Seems like he just gets to feeling better and it reoccurs. I am going to keep him on the probiotics and on the Wellness Weight Management w/ a little NB duck/potato. We'll see how it goes. This HGE is so hard on their little bodies and I worry that the next time will be it. :cry2::cry2::cry2::cry2::cry2::cry2:

Another day and night have gone by and my little Toby boy has been doing better. Still not himself, but definitely not vomiting or bloody stools, actually no stools at all yet since Friday but then this happened the first two times as well. He is very needy right now and wanting to be held a lot ....... especially by his daddy! He hates the grass which I am sure that I have mentioned before but yesterday he went outside and just laid in the grass

He has been eating regular a bland diet that I have made with chicken/rice/probiotics/SD id............seems to like it. We'll see how he does today. :)

Thanks again to my MT Family for their concerns and prayers for Toby and me!:grouphug::grouphug:

So sorry to hear Toby has been ill, and want to send my wishes for his speedy recovery. Sounds like he's already doing better, but hope he kicks this and that it never comes back. It sounds so frustrating, especially when vets don't do the right thing on the first visit.

Well Toby's doing better and pooped for the first time late last night and it was a "perfect" poop! YAY............seems like the bland diet works well with him and he eats everything up. I may be doing some homecooking for him asap and then when I finish up the dog food with the girls, I'll switch them to the homccooked meals as well. Never thought I would be going for dogs but then I don't have any dogs, just hairy kids.:wink5::wink5:
