how often do you bathe your maltese?

Hi.

Like I said in my last post, my mother had a maltese when I was little. I don't really remember bathing him, but I sure do remember brushing him (that was my job).

How often do these dogs need to be bathed, assuming that they live inside most of the time and get walks every day?

The reason I ask is because I was just reading about Afghan Hounds. This breed grows long, human-like hair just like Maltese, and they need extensive grooming like a maltese. Afghans are supposed to be bathed regularly (once a month, or more often, if the dog spends a lot of time outside) because the hair gets "greasy" and gross just like human hair. It needs to be washed or it will get stringy and gross.

Sorry for such a long post. I am just wondering. Generally speaking, how often do Maltese need to be bathed?

I try to bathe AT LEAST once every two weeks. Sometimes once a week if she gets dirty. But I try not to do it everyweek because her hair dries out but if she's dirty then it gets done.

For me though its really on an "as needed" basis. Others have a very strict bathing schedule but Mitzy likes to be a dog and play outdoors so sometimes she needs a bath if she's dirty.

My 2 get baths every 7 to 10 days. Since they sleep in my bed,they need to be reasonably clean.;) I wash faces & feet as needed. In the winter they can usually go 10 days since they're not outside as much.

Mine are inside 95% of the time, only going outside to potty! So they really do not get dirty but I still try to bath them every 7-10 days not because they smell but because the coat needs to be conditioned to stay healthy as well as keeping the skin clean. But I have gone as long as 14 days without bathing them. Now if you are talking YORKIE, that is a 7 day without fail job!!! Otherwise he starts to smell..........poor boy! LOL

I love giving him a bath but I try to keep it at the 10 day mark .Face and feet as needed. I don't want to dry out his skin .The groomer told me every 14 days but I love the blow dry and comb out because he just lays down and sleeps, so I just can't get to the 2 week point!

Emma gets a bath once a week and her face washed at least every other day. She's an "inside" dog but I just love a snuggly, freshly bathed pup!

I bathe Nemo every 14 days and he gets professionally groomed every 6 to 7 weeks. :D

I try to bathe them every 7-10 days but I must admit that lately it does happen every 2 weeks!

Mine seem to get bathed at least 10-14 days depending on how dirty they get, now feet gets cleaned every time they come in fromm outside esp this time of the year, rainy, muddy, at least when the snow come the ground will be frozen. If they smell before they get bathed, go to groomer at six - seven weeks.

I bath Mia once a week and wash her paws in between baths. We have a little ritual when I start to bath her I put her towel in the microwave and get it warm. I wrap her in it and set in the recliner and she takes a nap as soon as I sat down!!!!! This is one of our bonding times.

I haven't posted here in awhile. I lost my hubby on Easter Sunday and it's just Mia and I now. We are in Florida for the winter.

Posh gets a full bath about every two weeks or sooner if she needs it. Between baths, she gets face, butt, and feet "mini" baths.

Baths are a weekly thing (almost always Saturdays) and brushing is a daily thing (including teeth). These are indoor girls that only go outside to potty and go for walks (weather permitting).

I have a dog in oil so she gets bathed every 3 days. My other girl in coat gets bathed usually once a week and my dogs in short clips are usually bathed every two weeks.

I bath Ullana every 8 to 10 days, depends on the hair condition.

She's not dirty but her hair needs the care and in winter every week because the dry heating air.

I agree with most everyone else.I give mine a bath once a week.Unless they get dirty. They do get kind of stringy looking if I wait to long.I use a gentle shampoo so the natural oils are not stripped out.

I bathe Chloe between 7-10 days, and fix dirty paws as needed. I also use Spa Lavish Facial Scrub under her eyes, on her beard and under her chin more often b/c she does eat some wet food with her dry = dirty beard :tounge: And it smells like Vanilla & Blueberry, so she smells extra pretty when she's close and wants to give or get kisses :p

Heddy, I am very sorry for your loss, I hope things are moving forward for you.

Where in Florida are you? We live in south Florida near Ft Lauderdale and if you are down this way, we would love to meet you.

OK back to OP... in the Fall and Winter, our Malts get bathed about every 10 days, some times more often sometimes up to 14 days, depends on outside time really. Our dogs are never stinky. I also make sure behinds stay clean and faces stay clean. Combed twice a day for sure though. :)

I bath mine every 7 to 10 days not because they are really dirty but mostly to maintain their coat. The hair doesn't matt as much if it is freshly washed and conditioned.
