I'm getting a little disappointed in myself...I can't seem to control the mats on LB's ears even though I brush her everyday. She's such a tomboy, she rolls all over the place and gets her hair all tangled. Then her tail gets all matted. She hates her tail being brushed and we fight every day about it. Any advice is helpful, I'm tempted in trimming her ears.

TRIM CUTS EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK

I hate those words!!! I love furbutts in long hair. Face it, you have a little tomboy on your hands! LOL

She's still young but just keep the daily routine of grooming up.......you are the boss!!!!! Try using some conditioner especially on the mat and let it set for about five minutes and then try to work through it pulling it little by little apart! It takes time but it saves the hair.

Andrea suggested Bo Derek's shampoo to me and I bought the Detangling Shampoo and I am truly amazed at how it has affected her coat. I had must less mats..........and I brush every day. But I do use a leave in conditoner as well by Petsilk! My kids hate their feet done, don't mind anything else, but hate the feet.........but they still get them done!!!!!:D

Carol, is that Bless the Beasts? I've heard of it, but never tried it. As you can tell, I take the easy way out, but I do want her hair to grow out.

She's never calm unless she's sleeping:D LOL! I don't know if I'll ever be the boss of her when it comes to grooming. I wonder if she will ever calm down. But, it's okay, I love her being so active it keeps me young. If I can just control her matting.

I'll try those products and see how she does. Any other suggestions?

NO NO NO, YOU MUST NOT CUT..........you need to work with the mats. Do you have a special place you do her grooming. I have a small table (not for dogs) in my spare room and when they go on that table, they know it is grooming time. They just lay down and let me do my magic. I've been doing Toby since he was six months and he just lays there so good. Kallie before she lived with us was always sent to a groomer and kept in a short puppy cut. So when we adopted her at two, she was familiar with grooming procedures but now that she is in full coat.........it is a whole different grooming process but she has adjusted well to it.

Just be firm with the grooming sessions! Do half and maybe let her play and go at the other half a little later. This is an everyday thing!!! They poop every day, they get groomed every day! She has to know that she is going to get groomed and there is no other choice! Be a Pack Leader!!!!:)

As soon as I get Toby done, the very first thing he does is shake like crazy and then he runs into the living room and runs his nicely styled topknot around the dog bed. By the time he is done, he looks like a goof! But he's my goof. I just call him over make him sit and take my boar brush and lightly rebrush his hair quickly back into place and then I give him a treat and get him involved with playing. Kallie, well she shakes a little but she is such a lady and so proper. She struts her stuff and knows she is a knock out!

Just calmly rebrush her hair back to a nice style and commend her for letting you do it and get her attention onto something else. You need to post a new pic of her so I can see how long her hair is.............if I remember, it was really really really short!!!!

She's a happy chickadee tomboy........and she is still young. Just don't give up!!!

If you have to cut a matt our then slice into the matt, do not cut across it or you will end up with a bald patch!

It could be the shampoo/conditioner that you are using just now that could be drying her hair out too much, this can cause her hair to matt more easily, sounds like she may need something a little more softer on her hair! sorry i cant recommend anything but I'm sure what the girls already mentioned are good stuff:D

Try spraying your grooming tools w/ Enjoy Spray and Shine (human)...available at local beauty supplies or your hair stylist. The brushes/combs should glide thru hair easier.

Babe the "fussbudget" will permit me to comb both areas w/o a fight. Feet are a different story still.

I wanted to suggest a product too. I bought the Petsilk Liquid Serum. If I take just a dab of that and work it into the hair and then use a slicker brush, I can usually get a mat out without cutting. I know people have talked on the yorkie forum about cowboy magic works really well with mats too.

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOI feel like I am surrounded by snippers!!!!

I do use the cowboy magic on both the kids when they get a mat or two. I also have the petsilk serum and it smells great and makes for a very nice shine! But I have found the best solution to mats................BESIDES THE SNIP SNIP method! I Brush DAILY!!!!

So how many of you SNIPERS, really brush daily and still have a problem with mats????

Carol, I do brush everday her ears and her tail. I still get mats. I haven't snipped any since I posted because I'm trying to work it out. I'm using Silk Protien from CC for now till I order some of those products.

I told Carlos to hide all the scissors from me :sidesplit:

Well, just keep trying to work the mats out........it's not easy when they won't sit still and so I don't have to contend with that problem. They both know when they go up on that table, it is grooming time!

I know you probably just want to get the mat out at one sitting but you may have to put some conditioner/the silk protein and let it set for a bit and then maybe just work at it two or three minutes. If that is all Lilybelle can handle at the moment ......... then just work at it for that time. Talk to her "good girl" when she does sit still and allows you to groom her and maybe even a treat when you are done. Commendation is a big key cause they "want" to please you, they really do! Then give her some space and try again in another 15 minutes. I know it is a pain.....it even sounds like a pain to me!!! ROFL BUT, in the long run, you are accomplishing two things..........a nice long coat and training for grooming! Hang in there!

Also, one more thing.......Kallie had more mats when she was in the puppy cut than with the long hair. Toby is my little "mat-maker." :D

I'm not the one snipy off mats...I merely suggested a spray for the brushes/combs prior to grooming sessions so the grooming tools would glide thru the hair.

I've not encountered the mat problem.

I have an expensive dematting tool but a dressmakers quick unpick works just as well to ease out a matt.

I am like Carol now though, and just ease them apart with the comb. Grooming everyday does make it so much easier to get out the occasional matt.

I am determine that Scrappy is going to get a long coat even if it kills me LoL Thankfully, Scrappy loves to be brushed .... he just loves it. :)

Tails and ears take FOREVER to grow I know lol I once cut Scrappy's ears so short the family kept reassuring him that it was okay, as, they had a search party out looking for his ears. :(
