Hi there! Thought that the members on here may be the best resources! We're looking to add a female maltese puppy to our family. Looking for someone in the Houston area who is reputable and not trying to charge $1000-$2000 for a pet only -- no showing or breeding future I can assure you. Please send contact info. Thanks so much!

I'm not sure if you will find anybody who doesn't charge the going rate for a well-bred pup who can be considered 'reputable.' If you were planning on breeding or showing, the prices would be a whole lot more than $1000-$2000, believe me! So my advice is you don't want to spend the a lot, i would look into a rescue or a retiree from a show breeder (adult dog) have you looked at the American Maltese Association website? That's a good place to start
http://www.americanmaltese.org and the breeder list is organized by state.

I would not recommend buying a 'bargain' puppy from a backyard breeder, chances are you will wind up with a maltese that does not look like the maltese standard (bigger than typical, longer muzzle, incorrect coat, etc)

When i was first looking for a maltese, I didn't know anything and couldn't believe I was spending $2000 for a pet but now I realize how lucky I got! I bought Lucy from a show breeder (since there were no malts in the classified ads or pet stores by me at the time) and said the same thing, I just wanted a pet, not a show dog, so what did i care about champion lines? What I got was a pet who looks like a show dog. Temperament, health, looks and personality - I couldnt' ask for better. She is 4 years old now and sparked a huge obsession and now my 11 year old daughter, Marina, and I show maltese. Marina shows our first maltese, Lucy in junior showmanship and they do very well.

She is spayed and is a pet but is a great example of what spending a little extra for a puppy from a good show breeder can give you.

I agree with Stacy I don't think you will find a well bred girl for lower than $1,500 and that would be a older girl at that. There are plenty of Malts in rescue looking for a good home for much less than $1,000. Check out Petfinder.

I found two of my girls on www.Petfinder.com and the other someone just gave away. But to get a quality pup you will be spending a bit more money than what you would like; even if you intend on it being a pet. Hope you do a lot of research about breeders and quality before you let your heart fall in love with one because it's cute and cheap!!!I agree with Stacy and Maggie.
