I am looking for an older (as in not puppy) 1 or 2 year old Maltese to be companion to Lilli. I have an Aussie with a tumor pressing against her spine and she is loosing control or her back legs. She fell three times today and I have decided not to put her through surgery or pain. She is 13 and recovery would be difficult at best. I would like to find a retired show dog, maybe one that wasn't quite good enough to finish, or didn't like it. Male or female doesn't matter as I will want spayed or neuter. I can provide excellent references and will fly or drive as needed to pick up if I find a match. Lilli was a year old in December and weighs a little over 5 pounds. I PREFER ..not Require ..smaller 4 to 5 pound range. May do some basic obedience training, but don't plan any competition, just want a family member.

Hi Becky.........sounds like you have fallen in love with the maltese breed! Haven't we all??? LOL
The best thing is to contact a few breeders by email and ask if they have any retirees, maybe even call them, and get on a waiting list also. Most breeders will place a retiree for the cost of spaying/netuering, dental and getting them up to date on shots. And always ask the important questions before making a decision and learn as much as you can about the retiree! Sometimes there are rehomes in the classified section of the Petfinder.com site as well as rescues that are purebred! I got two of my fluffs off of Petfinder, one at least two years old and one that was 2 1/2 years old, both rescues..........oh and I forgot about Toby, my Yorkie........but he was a rehome. But even rescuing is not cheap. Brandy was $250 but she had everything already cared for so she was our least expensive fluff. Toby was $350 and also had everything, just had to get his license. Kallie was $250 but then we had to spend another $400 to get her utd with shots, spayed, meds, physical, dental, etc.
Buffy was "FREE" but again, we had to invest over $350 to get her utd on shots, dental, spaying, meds, etc. But when you go through a rescue, they usually have all those things already done for you and so you are simply paying for those services.

I agree with Carol. You can look into some retirees. They are so beautiful and would make a wonderful addition .
Good Luck :D

I just returned from the Vet. I was wrong about the tumor, it is just a fatty tumor and not causing the problem. Her eyes are twitching (I can't remember the term the Vet used), but he thinks she has a brain tumor or stroke. Checked ears for infection, but they looked clear. Not good news. Gave her a shot of I believe steroid and antibiotic just in case it might be infection and will watch her the rest of the week. If she starts getting better, great..if she gets worse , there is nothing I can do. Her eyes move uncontrolably and it affects her balance. my heart is breaking.

I am so sorry to hear about your Aussi. I'm sure she's confident that you will make the right decision for her.
As far as adopting, I myself was trying to adopt a maltese from a reputable breeder and it's hard. I believe they wanted me to wait 6 months or so. If your not in a hurry and are willing to drive I might be able to look into my e-mails and send them to you. Some were way to far from me. Then I fell in love with my new addition (yorki) so it work out for me.
I hope I didn't erase them.

I had to put Ginger ( My 13 yr old Aussie) to sleep last week.
Last night we went out to dinner with some friends. It was the first time Lilli was left alone since Gingi passed. When we got home, she was so excited and had been in such anxiety she got sick and threw up repeatedly. She almost had what I would call a canine anxiety attack. Then she would not leave either my husband or my side. Last night she almost slept under me she was trying to stay so close. This morning, she would not even go outside unless I was right beside her, she finally peed and pooped, but with her eyes on me the whole time. I take her with me most places, but there are some places she just can't go. I have an X pen and open crate I will leave her in in future (last night she was loose in the house), but I think what she needs most is a buddy. I don't think I want to go through the whole puppy stuff, especially in winter in Ohio, but if anyone out there knows of an older (as 1 to 3) yr old that needs a good loving forever home, please let me know. I would prefer already neutered or spayed or will have done by my vet. Healty is most important. I will drive or fly if necessary to pick up. Smaller is better for me as we do take our dogs with us as much as possible. Lilli is exactly 6 Lbs and prefer to find someone her size or smaller. I can supply references.
