 Animal Deaths Prompt Pet Food Recall
Menu Foods Recalls 60 Million Containers Of Wet Food

POSTED: 5:24 pm EDT March 16, 2007

WASHINGTON -- A major manufacturer of dog and cat food is recalling 60 million containers of wet food.

Menu Foods said it's received report of dogs and cats suffering kidney failure after eating the food. About 10 animals died.

Menu Foods supplies store brands to Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger, PetSmart and other retailers. The recall covers its "cuts and gravy" style food sold between early December and March. The food comes in cans and small foil pouches. It consists of chunks of meat in gravy.

The company said it's not sure what happened and product testing hasn't revealed a link that would explain the illnesses and deaths.

Menu Foods didn't immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall but said the information will be on the company's Web site Saturday morning. For more information, contact Menu Foods at 1-866-463-6738.

I found this info online. Hope nobody's baby gets sick. We don't do wet food, so we're safe.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico

PetSmart sent out a list shortly before 8:30 p.m. Friday stating that the following wet food brands would be taken off their shelves due to the recall:

Sophisticat

Authority

O-ward

Great Choice

Iams

Eukanuba

Neutro

Science cat

Mighty Dog

Mixables

I feed LB and Kira wet food with their dry kibble. I'm thankful that their wet food is not in that list! Thank you so much for that information!

Jack was getting the wet food in the foil packets but we stopped feeding it over a month ago. We just put him on the NB Duck & Potato only. The hard nuggets are better for his teeth anyway.
Sure hope no pups get sick.

I went to their website and checked the food that we feed the girls and it didn't mention the canned food but the ones in the pouch, we feed the ones in the can. However, I'm gonna stop feeding them that food. :(

I would AVOID THESE BRANDS ALTOGETHER until and unless a reliable report is published detailing what is going wrong with their pet foods.

I just threw out the last 2 packages I had. It's sad that you search and search for good food with good ingredients to feed the furbabies then this happens. Mia seems fine hopefully there will be long lasting affects.:(

I just checked out the website and saw that "Nutro Natural Choice" is on there. I feed my babies that once in a while and have a few cans in the house, but not the one's recalled. I'm still going to just throw it out. No way could I feed them that knowing this brand is on the list. Now I don't want to give them any wet food. Maybe I'll start cooking for them again. I think tonight I'll try to trick them with some warm beef broth over the dry food to make it moist. Ya think they'll figure it out? :bleh:

Brenda, once you mix in the broth with the kibble put it in the microwave for a few seconds & then stir it all together! This seems to mix the taste, try it & let us know how you get on!

I use nutro natural choice but I only use dry. I started to buy the canned a few weeks ago when he had his dental surgery but just wet the dry enough till he could eat it. I am really glad I made that decision.:maltese7:

they should be fine i think its mainly a long term thing... but i onno if they arent showing signs of kidney failure heres some quik things i looked up

Chronic Failure

Increased thirst and urine volume
Weight loss
Weakness and exercise intolerance
Tendency to bleed or bruise easily
Acute Failure

Dehydration (To test for this, gently pull the skin away from your dog's middle. If the skin does not immediately spring back, the dog may be dehydrated.)
Stiff-legged gait and arched back (a sign of painful kidneys)
Little or no urine production

also pale gums is a way to check for dehydration.
