I just discovered this site and I am very excited about it. I do not have a maltese (yet) but I am searching for the right girl for us. I do have a yorkie and spend a lot of time on Yorkie Talk. I welcome any suggestions for my search. I seem to be finding a lot of young pups but I am interested in searching for an adult dog to adopt. I will continue to look around but would like to become involved in the Maltese Talk world!:)

HI ASHLEE AND FIONA; WELCOME TO MALTESE TALK!!!!!!

So glad you joined the forum and so exciting to hear you are looking for a maltese........you might want to consider a "retiree" from a breeder. They are an older dog around 2-4 years old. Very reasonable also.

I am also on YT...........I'm owned by three maltese and a yorkie boy, Sir Toby. I look forward to getting to know you better in the coming months.

Thanks everyone! Yes I have thought of a breeder but (I am proably going to get myself in trouble here) I am looking for a Maltese that is on the smaller side. My Fiona is very very small. I had no idea she would stay this small when I adopted her. She will be 1 in 2 days and weighs only 2.8lbs. Due to the fact that she is so small I am looking for a Maltese around 4 or 5lbs. I want them to be able to play without worrying that Fiona could acidently get hurt.
I also have a schnauzer named Sam. He weighs 17lbs and he is great with Fiona but they just can't play. He is a bit older and doesn't want to play as much anyway.
I believe that a dog used for breeding should be a bit larger then what I am looking for even though I know there are those who breed the smaller ones. If I did find one I would certainly consider her.
I recently found a puppy that although very young right now will possibly be on the smaller size so I am asking question.
Still on the look out!
I look forward to meeting lots of Friends here on MT! It is nice to see some members who are both MT and YT fans!:)

There are several breeders that will not breed a maltese when they are under four pounds obviously due to the risks to the mother and so they usually will place them in homes as "pets" since they are not suitable for the show ring. I know of a few people that have just adopted these smaller ones from a couple of breeders for that very reason. Also some just retire the 4-6 pound range when they have completed their championships and have produced a few litters. They make wonderful pets and I would not hesitate to put my name on the list with a breeder making my "wants" regarding a maltese known.......you just never know with so many wonderful breeders out there, one might just come available soon! :)

Oh and I'd love to see some pictures of Fiona!! She sounds so petite and cute! :)

Fiona has been trained to model since she came to us at almost 13 weeks old. She will sit and turn her head till the camera snaps. I am not much of a dog trainer but somehow I trained her to model!

I am on Petfinder alot too. The problem seems to be either location or the fact that I have children. I will keep my eyes open though.

I was wondering if Malteses come in the smaller sizes like the yorkies too. (For lack of a better way to say it!) I don't want another dog as small as Fiona but was thinking around 4lbs, maybe a little smaller might fit with her. The smallest I have seen in my area are 5 or 6lbs. Anyone here have a really small maltese?
I have had her with dogs that are 5 or 6 lbs and even at that small size they are a lot bigger then she is. I want them to be able to play safe......

There are alot of people here with smaller maltese. Honestly I think that a dog 5 or 6 pounds, even 7 would be fine to play with Fiona. I have a 9 pound girl and a 75 pound Weimaraner and they are the best of friends. The bigger of the two will learn to play nice and the smaller.. well she will learn to stay out of the way :lol2: When looking for a dog I think health should be the main concern, then personality, then personal preferences. So if you find a maltese that you just love and is in the 5-6 pound range I'm sure that Fiona will be fine

What a handsome fellow :D

My schnauzer is mix with shih tzu so I'm not sure how he will come out as an adult. He definitely looks more like a schnauzer now. I really wasn't planning on keeping him but I keep saying no to everyone who was interested(for real good reasons too). I forgot to post pics of him in my album I will now.

If I keep mine and you find your's will have pretty much the same family :lol2:. Do you happen to have 3 skinkids like me

Fairy Tails,
Your Fiona is beautiful. Good luck finding a Maltese girl. They are SOoo special. I have had MANY dogs over my lifetime and my 2 Maltese were right up there at the top.
They were Maddie & Scruffy. Both have passed now. I DO have a Cavelier King Charles(Maddies BEST friend) named Lizzie and when Maddie passed Lizzie was SO sad & lonely (SO was I)That after 8 mos. (last Aug.) I got Mandy May. A Cavachon. Apricot color. Full grown now at around 10 lbs. Maddie was only 5lbs. and scruffy was 3 1/2 lbs. but she is a good match for 12 lb Lizzie. I NEARLY got a Maltese and then a maltipoo, but I was just NOT ready and then the moment arose to get Mandy, so we did! I decided to do the DNA testing and low and behold! Mandy has a small amount of Maltese. It is ALL in the eyes. Someone asked me recently IF she was a "red Maltese". Well, THEY have NOT been around for over 60 years or more! The Maltese is in there because Maltese years ago was used to control the size of the Bichon by some breeders and Cavachon is 1/2 Bichon and 1/2 Cavalier. I AM happy to know that there is just a tiny bit of Maddie in my NEW baby. SOMEDAY, I will have another PURE Maltese.
For now ANY suggestions on calming down a people loving older pup(Mandy) I have complete control on her BUT I am the ONLY one. She is absolutly nuts 'round my husband and WAY too forward for the older Lizzie.
Suggestions PLEASE!
Thanks, Pupster mom

It sounds like Mandy just needs to learn a little self control. I think it is one of the hardest things to teach and even more so with an older dog but if you take the time and have faith it will be well worth it in the end.
I used a couple of methods on my schnauzer. We made sure he was well exercised so that his energy was at the lowest it could be then we started with treats. He wasn't really food motivated but we found affection worked better for him. I believe food motivation is easier but you have to be smart with what you choose to give them. We narrowed down the areas that he needed help with to two main places. The front door and our living room, when we had company. We taught him the sit comand and the stay command and made sure he was calm before letting someone enter the door or the living room. We then let him greet who ever only when we said too and when he was calm. It took many many many tries but he is calm now. We also gave him a place to rest in our living room so he had a choice for calm activity while there. He can still be in the room but doesn't need to be the center of attention.
I am sure there are other ways out there and probably ones that work better but that is what worked for us.
Have you tried googling training methods? there is a lot of info out there. Weeding through it can be time consuming and of course you will need to choose the right one or modifiy things to fit your lifestyle and dog.
Hope this is of some help! Good luck with you new baby!

Looking forward to getting our beautiful bows!! Will be sure to post pictures everywhere!:D
