Hi I was wondering about using a slicker brush on my Maltese. I read not to use them in a Maltese book. However, the groomer told me I should use one. I use just a comb and pin brush. What should I use on my Maltese, Madison? what does everyone else use? Thank you for your help!

I typically just use a steel comb on Emma. I do have a slicker brush because I was talked into buying one when I first got Em, but I immediately decided that I didn't like it. It doesn't help with matted hair and it can HURT! I've accidentally raked it across my hand before and ouch...they only time I ever use it is sometimes to fluff the hair on Emma's legs after I've combed her but even that is rare.

I love using the slicker brush only on the portion of her hair that is matted. I put a steel comb in between her skin and the brush so I don't hurt her. My girl does get matted alot so I do use it but again you just have to be careful it doesn't touch her. I wouldn't recommend it if your furball doesn't matt, or all over her coat.

I have a slicker brush covered in dust somewhere in this house......obviously, I don't use one! LOL
I read in a book and was also told by other maltese owners not to use a slicker brush as it can break/damage the hair. I use a CC or Madan brush and a comb and nothing else. But by brushing daily, matts are not a big issue even with their long coats. Sometimes there are matts in their feet where they have chewed and so I add a little conditioner and let it set for a bit and then slowly work it out with the comb. A pin brush (one without the balls at the tip) and a good comb is all you need........JMHO

I only use a slicker brush if the hair is very short to give it a little fluff. I'd never use it on the longer hair.Since I had to cut Boo's hair pretty short because of his surgery,I use it to brush the hair on his legs. But I brush very carefully & lightly so it won't hurt. They can be pretty damaging to a long coat & pretty useless too.

I'm fixing to change her conditioner and see if that helps so I can use the brush less for that same reason. But for now the slicker brush is my only hope in removing the matts.

I only use the slicker for the legs and feet. It is to harsh on the rest of the body.

I've never owned a slicker and still don't. I use a steel comb and a madan brush. I am also going to order a Chris Christensian brass fusion brush as I've heard such amazing things about them. I also want to get a steel CC comb but I'll use my knockoff for now :lol2:

No never use a slicker on a maltese or any single coated dog, it will break and damage the hair. Only use a pin brush and comb. And never brush a dry coat, wet it down first.
I use a madan brush and comb and love it. The CC's were a bit expensive for me so this was a perfect solution for me.
