Lots of news...

I haven't been around for a while as life went crazy over the last few months. One of the worst things was that my little Emma got very sick suddenly in September. Over the course of two and a half weeks, we had eight vet visits, including appointments with a neurologist, an internal medicine specialist, and two emergency trips and a four day hospitalization. In the end, Emma was diagnosed with a liver issue that based on ultrasounds and test results was likely a congenital liver shunt, undiagnosed until she was over 8 and a half years old. The internal medicine specialist said that he'd only seen one other similar case in his career. She was scheduled for surgery but suddenly had seizures that couldn't be controlled and there was nothing left to do. I always knew that I wouldn't have her forever, but I was completely unprepared to lose her so soon. It was heartbreaking, and I was devastated.

On to a brighter bit of news...I brought a new baby home this week! I can never replace my sweet Emma, and she'll always be my first love, but I think I'm going to have some fun with Olivia Rose. She's 15 weeks old and super sweet! Please excuse the tear stains - she developed a little ear infection that caused some staining in the last few days but we'll get that cleared up soon!

Soooooo very sorry to hear about our sweet little lady, Emma. I know she was very special to you as she was special to all if us here at MT. I know it was probably the most difficult time in your life watching her go through all the visits to vets to figure it out, only to find out she was very ill.

Your new baby is a cutie for sure and she will never be a replacement for Emma but she will bring new things and smiles to your life. THAT is what Maltese do!

I too am sorry for little Emma's passing. It is devastating whenever we have to let them go, but you did everything possible for her. She knows that and she will always be in your heart.
I'm so happy that you were able to open your heart to a new little one. We know they will never take the place but they do bring a new love to add to the love we already have in our hearts. The hole fills up with new love and mixes with all the other love and perhaps you will see a little glimmer of Emma in Olivia Rose.
Many years of happiness to you both, and please keep us updated with all the excitement of a little one!!

So sorry for your loss of little Emma. It hurts so much when we have to let them go. Glad you found another little baby to love.

Emma was diagnosed late with a liver shunt. Normally it appears in young dogs especially if it is congenital. I would have Olivia Rose tested for Bile Acids, pre-meal and post-meal. For peace of mind, Charlie's breeder had him tested for this.

Thanks, everyone!

And yes, Olivia had bile acids testing done before I picked her up.

Thank you! It was so horrible losing Emma the way that I did - I was a mess. Barely ate or slept for almost a month. I hadn't intended to get another pup so soon but that's just the way that it worked out, and little Olivia has definitely brought some joy back into my house!

How wonderful to celebrate your 1st Christmas with Olivia Rose! I'm sure Santa Paws will bring her some new exciting stuff.

When I took Olivia for her third puppy shot last Tuesday, we also did blood work just to have a baseline for her (and because I'm now even more paranoid than ever...) Everything was in the normal range except for a slightly elevated GGT (liver enzyme level). I tried not to panic but after Emma it was hard not to! Our vet felt certain that Olivia was perfectly fine, but knowing the situation, she called the internal medicine specialist that saw Emma this fall. He had been out of the office but just called her back this evening to say that based on the rest of her blood work and especially her good results from the bile acids test that he wasn't at all concerned. He just suggests that we check again in three months to make sure that everything looks good. Big relief!!
