Learned something new today

I watched an interview on the laptop today and learned something new about our dogs and cats, esp. our dogs.
I never really realized that telling Jack to chew his food, slow down, is something what won't happen, because in the wild, their ancestors didn't and still don't chew their food. They are not made to chew. Their lower jaws can not move sideways like ours, they can only go up and down. In the wild, they grab the prey, rib off the meat and swallow. Their stomachs are not made to process food for a long period of time, it's not meant to sit and ferment in their stomaches.

Also stated was some of the best food diets for dogs:
#1 raw homemade
#2 cooked homemade diet
#3 commercial balanced raw diet (freezer section at pet boutiques)
#4 dehydrated or freeze dried diet
#5 cooked or refrigerated food (refrigerator section)
#6 human grade pet food- canned

With all homemade diets you still need to do your research and add the much needed supplements to the meal.

Instinct makes the raw dehydrated mixers for a treat. Fresh Pet is a refrigerated food that is based on raw ingredients.

I have to say that a lot of commercial dog food companies have come to realize what a dog needs in their diet and have started to manufacture quality dog food.......FINALLY!

Thanks for posting this, Cheryl! Teddy is the worst I've ever seen about gulping his food!

Hi ... Interesting - I never gave much thought about how they chew their food with the jaws not being able to move sideways. Thank you for the info. I do home cook because my kid has cushings and is prone to stone with some dog foods with their ingredients....

JiJi and Lil'Man do not chew AT ALL, it goes in and not even a bite.

JiJa and Joshie on the other hand sniff, inspect and play with their food before slowly taking a bite and then they savor it.

I have to separate them or else the others will come and grab their food. Actually Joshie takes longer cuz I have seen tiny JiJa just go under his nose and eat his food and he just looks like hey that was mine.

Very interesting. I know home made is best.....but I still struggle to do homemade for the people around here.
