Tough two weeks.

Bye bye $$$$ lately. I shared that the washer died and dryer was on its last leg so we replaced those. I like our new Whirpool washer and dryer. Next ordeal. We have a service contract to check the heat and air twice a year, once before summer and once before winter. Two and a half years ago we had to replace our upstairs air conditioning unit. Soooo, knew it was borrowed time on the downstairs unit for air. (for heat we have a furnace and gas). Well the check up was not good. There was a freon leak. The unit is 15 years old (warranty only goes to 10 years) They have banned the type of freon in old units unless you have an old one. But to discourage using that type of freon, they have made it super expensive. It would have been $500 just for the freon not even counting looking for the leak. And even if the leak was found and repaired there was no guarentee it would hold if fixed. Not to mention any other parts that would decide to go bad due to age. Soooo, a new unit to the tune of almost $6000.00. OUCH! They came at 10 in the morning and weren't finished until 7:30. Wowy My babies went crazy all day. They had to do a lot under the house to hook it up and made all kinds of noise and Several times the house even shook. At least the unit is in before we need it! Did you know that we had to have a County permit to replace the unit and then it had to be inspected! The countyinspector came out today and passed it. I guess that's a good thing but I don't remember having to do that with the other unit - hubby thinks we had to - I guess he took care of that while I was at work. I FORBID anything else to break for a long time!

I know it's not cheap to replace the a/c unit. We replaced the original unit 3 years after we moved in because I did not trust it ; strange noise. Put in a Lenox with more seers. At 15 years old I would not hesitate to change it. You will save on electricity. We don't need a permit here to replace the a/c. No permit required in Texas either.

Oh wow! It just doesn't pay to retire!!!!!

Our AC unit is 17 years old and believe me, during the summer it really gets a workout. Not so much during winter since winter seldom lasts more than two weeks total. It would cost us about the same to replace our unit and I'm sure that day is right around the corner.

I had to replace my AC about two and a half years ago. It was original to the house...29 years old when it finally died! I have no expectation of anything new lasting nearly that long...

On a side note, I had to replace the furnace a few years ago and two days later the hot water tank stopped working. That was an expensive week!

It seems when one thing goes out so does something else.
